Leap 16 Clean install, can't get Nvidia drivers to work

I have done a clean install of Leap 16, I have installed the Nvidia drivers from the Nvidia repository. I am running with a GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER. I have made sure that “nomodeset” has been removed from Grub, and I have rebooted the system after all of that. I don’t seem to be able to get the system to use the drivers, I am left with a display of 1024x780 and no other options. Below is the output from the following commands:

Now as using the OSS-Kernel, kernel-stable-backports kernel does not work with the Nvidia Repos…

You can remove the Repo.

Also forcing the re-install of the nvidia-kmp should get it to rebuild with that new kernel…

This URL returns a 404:

https://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/repos/opensuse16/x86_64/

and it would be the CUDA version. This is lucky, because it might get in the way. It might be a good idea to remove it.

This is the correct one:

https://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/leap/16.0

This one looks like it was the installation ISO on a USB stick; you might want to remove or at least disable it, too:

It’s one version behind with all relevant packages still being on version 580.126.09: The nvidia-open-driver-G06-signed-kmp-meta package still hasn’t caught up. That’s usually a sign that the overall set of NVidia packages isn’t ready yet for the next higher version (580.128.18).

I don’t see an nvidia-*-kmp-meta package in your list. If you try to install it, you might get a dependency problem; that might be the reason why you don’t have it installed.

You could use Myrlyn to downgrade all the other packages to the (working!) version 580.126.09. Uncheck the “Dependencies” → “ Autocheck” check box to avoid a dependency problem report for every click, then switch to the “Repositories” page, select the NVidia repo, and th “Versions” tab at the bottom right and select 580.126.09 for every package that has it. Make sure to add the nvidia-*-kmp-meta package, too.

Finally, check “ Autocheck” again and do a manual dependency check.

Switch to the “Installation Summary” page to see what will be changed. You should see a lot of red version numbers there: That’s a package version downgrade. This is what we are looking for.

Once everything works (after a reboot, of course), lock those packages to make sure the next zypper dup doesn’t upgrade the versions again.

I have this idea in my head to add an “NVidia Assistant” page to Myrlyn to handle those things; it’s really annoying to do so much complex manual work.

My problem is just that I can only test a very limited number of scenarios. And of course the Radeon users might also want something similar.

And there would need to be a text version if neither X11 nor Wayland works.

Well, maybe some day…

Stefan, this „downgrade“ of package versions is only necessary with the open kmp module. The TO uses the closed kmp, where all package versions are perfectly matching .

I only have the closed kmp‘s on my systems and don‘t get any mismatch ever.

The missmatch between the open kernel module and the rest of the drivers happens because of the different release path/distribution ways/repos/maintainers and stuff.

Yes, this is why I run the proprietary version via rpms, the open version I use the run files as can rebuild on kernel updates…

So delete the first one, you are using the kernel from the OSS Repo, so you can delete it safely.

Now install the right ones:
