Leap 16.1, Blank screen after changing theme

1. Fresh Install Leap 16.1 Build 44.2
2. System Settings > Quick Settings, change Theme to Breeze Dark
3. Reboot
4. Login
5. Blank Screen

Funny Issue. Fresh install of 16.1 Leap. Change the the KDE theme to Breeze Dark in Quick Settings of System Settings, and now I have no task bar and lose all opensuse customisation. I get the Black KDE launch window with “Plasma made by KDE” in the bottom right, and then a black screen. KDE is working because I can Alt+Space and have a hot corner at top right to change desktop, but nothing else is showing.

Don’t mind doing another fresh install but is there reason this is happening?

I myself just installed 44.2 yesterday … using KDE Plasma (X11) also … first step for me is to change to Breeze Dark.
Zero issues.
I’ve made many other changes besides the theme.

Are you logging in using X11 or Wayland ??

I believe I am logging in on X11, at least that’s what it says on the log in screen.

Same details.

I messed around with Edit Mode and it says the bottom panel (Application Bar) is there. I added new Application Bar at the top and that isn’t being shown either. No idea what’s going on.

Maybe what I wrote was misunderstood. See my screenshot.

I’m suggesting you return to the Login screen. Then, do NOT use “Plasma / X11” … choose “Plasma / Wayland”, then provide your login password.

Now, does the desktop appear as we would expect? using the “Plasma / Wayland” login option?

Now I understand. I tried Wayland and it’s the same.

It seems to be that only panels are not being shown.

See the screenshot. I tested this, by creating a new user account … then logged in as the new user.

I selected System Settings, then Color & Themes.
Then I clicked Breeze Dark … see the pop-up dialog box in the screenshot?
The second checkbox option, “Desktop and window layout” … that is normally (the default is) NOT checked.

But I checked it … read the text in the “Warning!” brown popup box.

Did you check that box? If you do, it REMOVES the panels, docks, and widgets, … which seems to be what happened to your desktop.

As a follow-up to my last Reply … the following should get your user account back to the default Theme, panels, etc:

Since there is no panel to select options:

Right-click on the desktop and select Display Configuration on popup menu
The System Settings should show up

Now, select Display & Monitor at the extreme upper left
The Main menu Panel (on left side) should show up

Now, mouse down to Color & Themes and click it …
You should see all the Themes available.
Click on the “openSuse” Theme (it’s the default) …

Then on the popup:
Click a checkmark (select it) in the “Warning!” brown popup box (that is shown in my previous Reply). Then click Apply.

That will change the Theme back to the default, to include the panels, docks, and widgets displayed. Did it work?

Good it worked.

So now, if you want to switch to Breeze Dark, go back to Themes, select Breeze Dark, and at the popup,

DO NOT select the “Desktop and window layout” checkbox - leave it un-checked. That should apply the Dark theme and leave the components in place

I did what you suggested and Desktop and window layout was not checked or selected. It applied the dark theme, however or reboot everything was gone again. Reset the theme back to “openSuse” and panels came back.

I don’t know why rebooting would do that.

I’ve just avoided Breeze Dark and gone through the individual settings and used the dark theme.

Hmm. No doubt frustrating.

Me? After I install … I login for the first time, then make over 20 major changes to the desktop configurations, and haven’t seen the same issue.

I make so many changes, when done, I simply logout, then log in again. I doubt that a reboot makes a difference. I’ll try with a test user account.

Have you tried that simple test? Create a brand new “test” user account … logout of your account, login as the new user, make the Breeze Dark changes. Then, simply logout of the test user account, then simply login again and see what happens. (If it works, there might be something rwong in your user’s ~).config sub-dir.(

If that was the case wouldn’t making any adjustment to theme would result in the same problem. I would argue it is something wrong with Breeze Dark configuration or how Breeze Dark gets applied.

I will give the test user a try when I have some time.
