Leap 16.0 installation from offline ISO installer lacks many basic packages

I tried this in a virtual machine because I cannot install in bare-metal due to another thread I just posted in the Install/Boot/Login section.

Once installation finished, to my surprise, many basic packages were missing, such as glxgears, tar itself, and can’t remember which other ones. I had to manually install them with zypper.

During installation, in the software section, I selected to install XFCE, Office, Multimedia, and that’s all. Certainly this installer lacks so many software options which past 15.6 installer had.

But tar missing? Why is Leap 16.0 default installation lacking several basic programs, unlike Leap 15.6?

All works here … and available.
Of course, I’ve not used glxgears for over 20 years.
Tar is here.

For comparison, I’m using 16.1 (installed from Offline ISO)

And I’ve been installing Leap 16 and 16.1 for months and have NEVER experienced “lacking packages”. All that is expected is there.

Even the selection “Basic” would include long-time basic Linux commands.

So now the command is “star” instead of the good old “tar”?

package_name != command_name . If I wanted to I could fork and name the package horse and provide tar as a part of the horse-1.0.rpm.

Right now I only remember that, when I tried to use tar, I only received zypper messages telling to install tar package. So probably star was not installed neither…

Details on how I installed Leap 16.0 are in OP.

@F_style I’ve been doing a number of server installs this weekend with a Agama json profile, the default installs star for me…

It’s worth repeating (my experience)… via a screenshot :+1:
(all expected [basic] Linux commands are present here in 16.1)

As shown, “tar” is there, and goofy-gears is running. I did NOT add those after installation.

I’d say there might have been some oddity with the installation configuration.

May I remind to the fact that there was no prove of what the OP claimed.

I would at least expect to see something along the lines of

henk@boven:~> tar
 tar: command not found
henk@boven:~>

(PS, I crafted the above, because tar is of course installed on my system).

Another missing package, at least in XFCE installation: package-update-indicator

More missing packages, nos in KDE (yes, I keep doing tests): 7zip and an audio player.

Ok, now I come with some proof

Tar is shipped now as “star”, and I don’t like it.
Also, since I use XFCE, I needed package-update-indicator, which is no longer in the repositories?

Also, galculator is missing in the repos.

Packages did not necessarily make the cut to Leap 16.0, package selection for Leap 16.1 is now closed, so you need to create a bug report and ask nicely if can be included. Perhaps the Maintainers did not want to commit to Leap 16.0, so never made it in etc… It also depends if SUSE or Community maintained.

The Leap 16.n series is a lot different that the earlier Leap product releases.

@C7NhtpnK Did your system install like that by default, or did you manually uninstall star and installed tar?

From my Leap 16.1 install with KDE, which I did a few days ago … all defaults … nothing added or modified.

That all depends on the default patterns for the selected desktop, if one is selected, in my example there was no desktop selection it was a minimal install;

  "software": {
    "patterns": [ "apparmor" ],
    "packages": [ "btop", "gptfdisk", "chrony-pool-empty", "fwupd" ],
    "remove": [ "*plymouth*", "*libply*" ]

Hello!

But tar missing? Why is Leap 16.0 default installation lacking several basic programs, unlike Leap 15.6?

I’m optimist because of these 2 reasons:

  1. As you are aware that tar even exists you proved that you are skilled user - surely be able to use zypper and install tar from online repositories.
  2. You are likely 1st user here that noticed missing tar on installation media - 11 months since LEAP 16.0 release - which means that tar is not essential for typical LEAP user (one can always install it later).

Please don’t take these comments as sarcastic - I just want to point out that who knows what tar is - such person is clearly able to solve this problem easily.

And that’s important - for example I always use Xfce/X11 which is missing from default Agama “product” on LEAP 16.0 (there is preliminary Wayland version only), but as skilled user I simply copied that YAML file and added Xfce/X11 pattern there - problem solved - details are on Agama/Leap16.0: example of BTRFS parent volume (@) + subvolume customization - #2 by hpaluch-pil
