hello,
following the reinstallation of my machine under opensuse leap 15.6, impossible to launch Openoffice 4.1.15
the launch console appears then disappears immediately whether in “user” or in “root”
deletion of Libreoffice: ditto
deletion of .openoffice ditto
reinstallation of leap 15.6 by unchecking the “libreoffice” option: ditto
reinstallation of leap 15.5 without network activation and by unchecking the “libreoffice” option: Openoffice OK!..
conclusion: there is a bug in the “french paté”, and in the leap 15.6 installation procedure
in fact, the installation of leap 15.6 does not take into account the deactivation of the “libreoffice” option, and installs it by default, and this installation causes Openoffice to malfunction…
workaround implemented: reinstallation of leap 15.5 outside the network, installation of Openoffice, verification of the good operation (openoffice OK), then UPGRADE under Yast to version 15.6 by checking that libreoffice is not installed
=> Openoffice OK
there is indeed incompatibility of the 2 suites if Libreoffice is installed first …
Online update of the system under Yast
restart: => Openoffice OK
installation of libreoffice writer
=> conflict libreoffice-24.8.1.2-150500.20.11.2.x86_64 with openoffice4.1.15_freedestop-menus-4.1.15-9813.noarch
continue => Openoffice OK; libreoffice writer OK
uninstallation of libreoffice writer Openoffice OK
tedious but effective …
if this can help …

So evrybody can see, what is going on in a terminal and what you are meaning…
Openoffice is not available in any official openSUSE repository. So if you have problems with 3rd party apps and repos, you need to report it at the relevant places.
While AOO project somewhat managed to deliver (almost) yearly “bugfix releases” the truth is that development stopped a decade ago: 4.1 was released on April 2014 and nothing else happened since then. Sooner than later it will stop working on modern Linux distros (last time I checked they where still building their binaries on CenOS 5). You do you, but honestly, there is absolutely no reason to use AOO on 2024, the LibreOffice build on Leap is just fine.
thanks for this feedback, but my point, although it is based on my experience of installing OpenOffice, highlights the fact that the installation of Opensuse Leap 15.6 does not take into account the fact that I had disabled the “libreOffice” option and imposes it on me by default, which distorted my analysis.
This is an evolution or a bug / 15.5 that I had not taken into account
for the rest, everyone appreciates or not the LibreOffice environment
I simply hope that this can be useful to other users and I remain fully satisfied with Opensuse since its origin …
If you properly deselect the office pattern (and select deinstallation/cleanup of unneeded packages), the installer respects that. There is no bug.
Not exactly an answer to your problem, but it’s possible to “install” AOO (and LibreOffice, BTW) as user by unpacking the provided rpms. See the Parallel Installations section of this user guide for more detail.
(Yes, the penguin who wrote that guide is this same penguin who writes now; back in the day and until I left the project I was an AOO PMC board member and forum administrator… but that’s an old story I don’t want to remember…)

thanks for your answer, but actually, I don’t have any more problems … in the past … I used the method you mention at each change of Opensuse version, but for some time now, if Libreoffice is installed first, I can no longer launch Openoffice although it installs without error, even if I uninstall Libreoffice via Yast i searched and found a workaround by installing the system without libreoffice, and up to leap 15.6, it worked i opened this post to give my solution, it is worth what it is worth, but at least I found the Openoffice environment that meets my needs
thanks, but I’m sure I deselected the “libreoffice” option before installing (off-network), it even became a reflex …
there was no need to do a cleanup since it was an installation and not a System upgrade
on reboot, I was able to see its presence via Yast …
I don’t think I dreamed …
If you remove a pattern, nothing (except the “empty” pattern) gets removed. You need to check “Cleanup when deleting packages” to also remove the packages which got installed with the pattern.
I admit that it is not 100% sure, but as I read it, he did not remove the pattern, he deselected it in the installation process. And in that case all packages listed in the pattern (except of course when selected for another reason) will not be installed. Thus no cleaning up required.
thanks
i think you are talking about removing LibreOffice packages on a “working” system, i will think about it next time
but for my part, i installed a 15.6 (not an upgrade) and had unchecked the “libreoffice” option, hence my surprise to see it present after the installation…
