Leap 15.2 will not boot cloned disc with Clonezilla

OK, I just did a whole fresh install on a ssd of opensuse 15.2. Old Lenovo laptop, legacy type BIOS. Used disc encryption, BTRFS for system and XFS for HOME. Same way I ran 15.1.
First thing I noticed different was the boot. 15.1 said something about ms-dos on boot when waiting for the encryption password, now it says gpt there.

Anyway, cloned the ssd with Clonezilla, like I always have done. This time it did not ask me to clone the master boot record, like it has always done, which I thought was odd. So I put in the clone and all I get is blinking “/”. OK, maybe a bad copy, so I went thru the process again, same result. Now this has ALWAYS worked with 15.1. So maybe Clonezilla is old, so I flashed the latest, and retried - same blinking “/”. Not happy.

So I found some comments about Foxclone. Figure, what do I have to lose? Flashed it and cloned the drive. Booted the clone and it worked! OK what went wrong with Clonezilla? Or what changed with 15.2 from 15.1 that made it not work? Will I ever be able to use Clonezilla again? Is this because of my BIOS is not UEFI?

Apparently it changed the format from DOS to GPT format. Nothing wrong with either but GPT is becoming standard

fdisk -l as root will show what you currently have

Clonezilla ??? who knows Nothing I know would effect how clonezilla works. Only thought is the change from DOS format and GPT since GPT handles legacy booting differently then GPT does, Maybe an old copy of clonezills may not see the differences???:\

I thought it was well known, that clonezilla is not guaranteed to restore booting. It can require booting a rescue system and re-installig booting. And that’s an even more likely problem when you are using disk encryption.

Just remember next time to use dd

Hey stranger
AFAIK, foxclone is just a gui front end to partclone, just use that instead?

… or try REAR
