Leap 15.2 - Gnome UI fails in start - no login entry

Hi

Some findings getting Gnome UI on…

Installing of Leap 15.2 (openSUSE-Leap-15.2-DVD-x86_64.iso) from USB stick was processed succesfully with Gnome UI option on (Dell Lattitude D620). In first start starting process fails/stops before login screen. With Ctrl-Alt-F10 was displayed start messages that ended Wayland (graphics?) error ( gnome-shell-wayland.service). After that pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 was used start command line style login where “root” user was used to log in. Then ‘light’ UI version lightdm was started (as root on command line), which opens normal Gnome UI with limited actions. Now laptop was also succesfully connected with wire to net. Then UI allowed open online update (search with “update” word UI application activation box) started. After installing all updates (takes about 1h with few restarts) finally after normal restart Gnome asks normally user login (on graphical window) and opens Gnome UI with all things working ( etc. allow also wireless connection access).

I hope that this helps Gnome users in updating to latest Suse version.

Hi
No sure what your graphics specs are, perhaps Nvidia and Wayland? If so then you need to edit /etc/gdm/custom.conf to uncomment the line about Wayland for using gdm…

Hi

Thanks your reply.

After online updates done in previous post Gnome (…and login) has now worked Ok.

Checked etc/gdm/custom.conf that you mentioned and that is quite empty

[daemon]
InitilaSetUpEnable=False

Uncomment the line below to force the login screen to use Xorg

#WaylandEnable=False
[security]
[xdmcp]
[chooser]
debug}

Uncomment the line below to turn on debugging

#Enable=True

If someone does not get Gnome working (older Dell Latitude D620), try KDE as it works also now, but KDE is lightly slower than Gnome. Also with KDE there some UI refresh delays with black backgroud after fresh installation, but that also was corrected after running all updates currently available.

It looks that running all OpenSuse online updates has corrections that help.
