LEAP 15.1 "the video encoding is not supported on your device"

Running Firefox, and on various news and other sites I get some video that will not play. The message is, at times, the “video encoding is not supported on your device” at other sites variations that suggest a decoder issue.

I am at a loss.

You could share a link to an example or two so that we could check for ourselves and advise further. In absence of that, please review the Multimedia-Guide-for-openSUSE-Leap-15-1

@joea:

The problem is, HTML5 needing MP4/H.264 support plus, Firefox plus, patents licensing issues.

Please take note of the “Additional package repositories” you’ll need: <https://en.opensuse.org/Additional_package_repositories>.

  • Please take special note that, you only need the “Packman Essentials
” repository to deal with Firefox’s current HTML5 support problem … - Please be aware that, the packages listed will pull in some more packages, due to dependencies …
  • Please be very aware
that, there are packages with the same names in the openSUSE repositories which, do not include the needed MP4/H.264 Codecs for “blacklist” reasons – please double check that, all the packages being installed, including those being installed as a result of dependencies, are being pulled from the Packman Essentials repository!!!

There’s also, the openSUSE licensing and patent issues standpoint: “openSUSE:Build Service application blacklist” <https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Build_Service_application_blacklist>.

  • As an aside, Mozilla (Firefox) also seems to be taking a similar view …

Now I’m going out on a limb:

  • The “openSUSE Multimedia Guide
” is mentioning Codecs which were relevant before Firefox began supported HTML5 in one form or another. - AFAICS, assuming that, you’re only using the current Firefox as your Web Browser then, you only need the Packman Essentials
packages listed in the “Firefox MP4/H.264” SDB.

I did follow your suggestions (I think p roperly) and that resolved the video issue in Firefox. However, the procedure alsoda installed some additional stuff and removed two items I had installed, FreeCad and Audacity. These reinstalled fine. However, upon restart, I found my Desktop completely changed. I am no longer able to see “shortcuts” I placed there (they still exist as files, can see them in a terminal window), but also cannot find some items such as the “touchpad” settings (it’s an older laptop, Toshiba satellite L505). Which is especially frustrating as the default settings make it too “twitchy” for my hands.

Wondering what I did (wrongly ?) and what I can do to get back, other than re-install and try to recreate that environment? I know since you have no idea what I had, this may be a rather moronic request, but, … .

Meantime, I will peruse the FAQ before doing much else.

Which GUI Desktop do you use?

  • GNOME, KDE Plasma, something else?

With KDE Plasma, I haven’t experienced any of the issues you mentioned – I also have Audacity installed – at no stage was Audacity removed.

Did you use YaST to install the additional packages?

  • Or, did you attempt to perform the installation from a CLI with Zypper?

What’s the form of the shortcuts on your Desktop?

  • Links to files?

You should, possibly, check the entries in ‘/var/log/zypp/history’ – there should only be entries similar to these – depending on which Packman mirror you’re using:

If there are any other entries in the Zypp History log file, which occurred at the same point in time when you added the packages needed for Firefox HTML5 MP4/H.264 support then, please revert whatever it was that those actions provoked – with YaST – to allow you to control what’s being changed in your system.

  • Please note that, “libvidstab1_1
” is available only from the openSUSE main repository – it’s not in the Packman Essentials repository …

BTW, please ignore the file ‘/var/log/zypper.log’ – it doesn’t contain anything useful for this issue …

Thanks. Restoring plasma5 desktop and associated files (kde) restored what I had been using. However, while I can select it, it is not set to “auto” start and cannot, at the moment, find how to set it so. I used “update-alternatives” to set it as preferred, but the “auto” status does not change.

I did use YAST initially but must have done something odd, as it did remove much.

Thanks.

Thanks, used this for 15.2
