Leap 15.1 [Failed] Failed to start Setup Virtual Console

Hi all together,

I’m new to this forum, but use OpenSuse for more than 10 years already. I’m not an expert, but a bit experienced. In the past I managed all problems I’m faced with, but now I’m somehow lost.

I spent already more or less two days reading me through bugzilla, forums and other sources. But I can’t fix the problem, which is this:

I don’t have access to my machine which is this:
AMD 4 cores
AMD Athlon X4 860 Quad
L2 Cache 2048
16 GB Memory
Boot from SSD 45 GB
Home on 500 GB HD
Graphics Radeon R7/R9 360 AMD/ATI
Mainboard Asrock

I upgraded from Leap 42.3 to Leap 15.0 via DVD, all went OK.

Then I upgraded from Leap 15.0 to Leap 15.1 via DVD. all went OK. After the upgrade I connected to the net and started to update from the repositories. Not in one batch. The system did some 500 updates and an update for the ketrnel to the newest version. Reboot. Wanted to continue updating, but then the Network-Manager cut my Internet connection during the selecting process of updating, though I’m using the wicked handling. I have fixed IP adresses. I just restarted the system hoping it will be fixed after a reboot.

But then the real troule began:

[FAILED] Failed to start Setup Virtual Console.
I do not want to go into details here, because everything is described already in bugzilla under the Bug 1055834. The difference is that this bug happend under Tumbleweed and in 2018. But it affects obviously quite a few users.
My additional problem is that it is not only showing the message BUT the machine hangs completely. I can’t enter root password nor can I continue by pressing ^D as it is shown on the screen.

I can tell I tried solution of comment # 20. No change.

I tried Takashi Iwai’s workaround in comment 68. No change.

This bug was solved at that time and a new version of dracut was released.

If I look into the current repository for OpenSuse Leap 15.1 I find an even newer version of dracut which is 44.2…So I have to assume that the fixing is in this version as well ? Or can’t I ?

Can somebody help me ?

Please feel free to demand more information if necessary !

Kind regards

Stefan

There must be something strange going on. When you say you use wicked to run your network configuration. NetworkManager is not involved any more.

I have the idea that doing the update with only an arbitrary number of packages can leave components in a broken state beacause e.g. some libraries are already updated and others not, while both are used by an updated or not updated program.

Also a check of the repos you have enabled might be useful

zypper lr -d

But it seems you can not boot the system to do that command. Can you boot the system in maintenance mode (run level 1)?

Assuming your DVD upgrade properly set your repos,
The first question might be whether you’re installed on BTRFS.
If so, then you should try to roll back to before your 15.1 updating and try updating again.

If you’re not on BTRFS,
Then you’ll likely want to use your DVD to disable your lonline repos and “update”(upgrade) to 15.1 using the DVD, then with online repos enabled try updating again.

As for your specific vconsole error…l
It doesn’t appear to be very useful or specific to any problem, skimming a few online bug reports and discussions suggests it can be caused by many things and hardly anything related to a virtual console.

HTH,
TSU

Thank you Henk getting back !

by checking for answers I realised that my ansert to you from yesterday was not online. No idea why. My aplogies.

That was my assumption as well. And in deed it was weird. When Leap 15.0 came up the first time after the upgrade I immediately remarked the Network-Manager (NM) Applet in the System tray. I x-checked against Yast and found wicked configured !? So I Change to NM in Yast and guess what ? The Applet disappears. Success I thought and changed back to wicked. Disabled the Network Applet from the systray. Then I couldn’t get the Internet Connection up. It seems as if there was still something wrong and so I decided to upgrade from 15.0 Lead DVD to Leap 15.1 DVD directly. Hoping the difficulties would be eliminated.
That went well as described below. BUT the NM killed my inetrnet Connection during the online update of leap 15.1

I have the idea that doing the update with only an arbitrary number of packages can leave components in a broken state beacause e.g. some libraries are already updated and others not, while both are used by an updated or not updated program

The Connection was good for downloading the Contents of the repos. During my choices in yast the Connection was terminated by NM (the Journal proofs it). when I wanted to start the update Yast tells me no Internet Connection. So NO broken file was created on my machine. Leap 15.1 is only not completely updated.

Also a check of the repos you have enabled might be useful

zypper lr -d

There are ONLY Opensuse Repos involved ! Only the ones Yast puts there automatically.

And yes, I can get into run Level 1.

News from today: I managed to install Leap 15.0 completely with with online repos. BUT the machine hangs immediately when the ramdisk should start.

Looking into the Journal I have the Impression that the dev and / or file System is not there anymore, so the file cannot be found / loaded.

I managed to Export a Portion of this Journal concerning only the last ‘normal’ start of leap 15.0 (roughly 1000 rows) Shall I post it ? (Need to learn how before…)

Kind regards

Stefan

Thanks to you as well for your message !

HTH ? well as you can read from my anser to Henk I followed your advice at least partially :). And it helped somehow. But now I’m more away from a solution as before, because I now do not receive any error Messages anymore and can only read from the Journal which is not something I understand too good.

And with regard to your last comment, ooook… But I thought it fit so good to my Problem, the same top error message, the same error Messages in the Journal with regard not being able to load specific data though they were there. aso aso.

Have you then, suggesting to not consider These Information out of the bug thread any idea where I can start to search then ?

On the other Hand the Problem now seems to be at a different Location. But I’m not good enough in the deeps of Linux to judge this on the journals I can get.

Nevertheless, many thanks for your Support.

Stefan

Good morning Henk,

just to let you know I’m back in Business. Replaced my System SSD and installed Open Leap 15.1 from scratch. Now my original Problem became for me a more or less academic one, depending whether anybody is interested to find out what and why it happened. I file this experience now under too often upgraded instead of newly installed.

Thanks again for your Support !

Kind regards

Stefan

Nive to hear you are up and running again.

Yes, sometimes it is btter to just cut the Gordian knot and do a fresh installation. Even if the academic question still hurts a bit.
