I wondered if I could ask forum members for thoughts on any disadvantages of buying an LCD TV; (seemingly with VGA and HDMI connections) to use as screen for computer; (it might thus serve two functions at differing times?)
as opposed to buying an LCD screen from computer shop?
I’ve been using a “HD Ready” TV over Christmas (720, not 1080, so it runs at 1360*768) and I’d rather take a proper monitor for long term use. Resolutions aren’t as good, even on full 1080p, the monitor you listed only has an 8ms response where as monitors can be down to 2ms quite easily these days and 5ms is likely, and the contrast ratios are probably more likely to be distorted towards TV (I know that huge contrast ratios are normally between max and min at any time, not at the same time, so it is contrast of pure black to pure white, not a gradient of black to white).
Hi,
My friend is using a samsung 32" lcd tv with openSUSE on nvidia video card. I am empress. I don’t know the specs but you can maybe search. The reason he got the tv for his pc is to avoid adding tv tuner for his machine due to lack of slot for additional hardware.
I used a 1080p tv for a monitor for a while but it wasn’t supported in that mode, best I could get was 1080i (Nvidia 9600 on oS 11.1 64bit) but it wasn’t an issue because I didn’t have any HD media to play at the time anyway. I was using the PC as a media centre but it isn’t practical when you’re trying to fiddle with linux but your wife wants to watch TV.
thanks joerione; interested to hear of samsung; wonder what was model no? I agree Robert: wives and linux do not mix; produces rapid glazing of eyes; and may tumble into deep coma too;
