I have installed mplayer2 and it coexists with mplayer/smplayer and i want to keep it that way :p.
Is there any way to invoke it other then the cli with the file names? Like adding it to the “open with” menu you get when you right select a file under KDE 4.6? I have some heck of a long and PITA filenames. Invoking it like
So, you can always find the media you want to open with mplayer2, right click on it in a file manager like Dolphin, select open with, then other and enter the player name /usr/bin/mplayer2 and try it to see if it does what you want. If it was OK, then do it again, but this time check the option Remember application association for this type of application. Since you can always right click and enter the mplayer2 name, I am not sure I would put it into the lead by making it the default unless the default does not work.
Quick question on that James. That doesn’t change the association for this type of file globally does it? I have a different player associated with this type of file generally and I don’t want to change that. I am only using mplayer2 in special cases.

The association is only changed if you check the option Remember application association for this type of application. Otherwise, using it to play a file is only temporary. It is important to note that this is HOW you would change it if you try to play a file and it does not work, like in Firefox. Find the program that does work using Dolphin, then select open with, then other and enter the player name AND check the option Remember application association for this type of application. Now, when you try to play that file type it will work. I have had such a problem in Firefox before.
I would of course never even try to type that name without typos. Nowadays we have computers to work for us. One method would be typing the first few characters and then using the Tab key to expand this until it reaches a point in the name where there are more possibilities, type again one character, hit Tab …, Or I would use wild cards. Or I would use the mouse and copy/paste from an* ls* output.
I guess James’s suggestion is more to your liking, but IMHO you make your typo problem bigger then it is.
