Latte dock disappeared

I have used Latte dock for some time, mostly because I like the parabolic effect. After the latest rounds of updates, it disappeared. Searching for it to reinstall, I see reports that it is discontinued. In other places it is offered in community repos. None of those looked familiar and I know I didn’t have any of them installed.

My question is: should I continue to use Latte dock and where is a safe place to get it. Also, any recommendations on alternatives?

It has an official and OBS repo you can use as per the project’s Github page:

No indications of it being discontinued.

Yea, openSuse decided to remove Latte Dock from the standard repo.

Happened to me too … the removal was intentional - disappointed the only “announcement” is during the zypper dup, there’s the removal of the package, which is why it’s important to pay attention to package removals

I did this to install from the Extra repo:

# zypper addrepo https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:Extra/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/KDE:Extra.repo

# zypper refresh
# zypper in latte-dock latte-dock-lang

Don’t worry … all your settings still exist. After zypper install, simply start Latte Dock. And if you have it set to load at login, it will start as usual

Request 1155488: Delete latte-dock - openSUSE Build Service

Reason in the request:
“Incompatible with Plasma 6”.

I’m not on Plasma 6 (but yes, on P5), which hasn’t been officially released. :slightly_frowning_face:

Latte-Dock has been unmaintained for a while, upstream, while there has been some activity recently, there hasn’t been any commitment from anybody to actually look after it, and ensure bugfixes and whatnot, Generally speaking, it’s a good thing for distributions to not be shipping unmaintained software.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am tempted to use the KDE Extra repo since I like Latte Dock so much. But, if will just disappear again with the imminent release of Plasma 6, I think I will wait until we see what comes next.

Thanks again.

I too use Latte (for years) and it was blindly removed. I also used the Extra repo and it’s an instant fix - about a minute later and you’re running again.

Personally, I won’t immediately jump on Plasma 6 - I’ll let others beta test it for a while  I’ve also tested TW with Plasma6 (Krypton) and there’s not any (enough?) new features that I consider advantageous for my use. P5 works good enough.

I might have to come out of retirement (software engineer) momentarily to get Latte to work.

latte-dock farewell
