I am running KDE 3.5 on OpenSuse 11.1 and out of the box sound has been glitchy. At first reconfiguring the sound card in yast worked, but now all of a sudden the sound stopped and I don’t know why. What should I do? I had no problems in 10.3.
Thanks in advance

I believe the Dell Latitude 600 is not a “young” machine, but rather its been around for a while. It is possible Pulse Audio (which was introduced in 11.0 and is also now present in 11.1) is causing your old machine some hiccups. Some users have been so frustrated by pulse, that they have resorted to removing all pulse audio applications. I note that Gnome and KDE4 are more susceptible to pulse audio hiccups than KDE3 in openSUSE-11.1.
Did your sound come back after a reboot?
I can’t really tell you what your specific problem is. I can pass you some tools so that may be you can localize the problem a bit.
First off, when testing one’s sound, an excellent basic sound test, is to copy and paste the following into a gnome-terminal or kde konsole:speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twavYou should hear a ladies voice saying ‘Front left’, ‘Front right’ … 5 times.
When one’s sound is working, I find it useful to run in a gnome-terminal or konsole: lsof /dev/dsp* /dev/audio* /dev/mixer* /dev/snd/*to get a flavour as to what a good setup looks like (the above will tell you what devices are using your sound). Also to monitor your running processes you can open a second gnome-terminal or konsole and type “top” and let that run.
When the problem reappears, re-run lsof /dev/dsp* /dev/audio* /dev/mixer* /dev/snd/*and compare the earlier output with this current output.
Also check what is showing in “top” Also check your mixer. Many users forget to turn up both PCM volume and Master volume.
Now if your sound simply is not there (at all by any type of test or application), then I would need more information. To provide more information, with your PC connected to the internet copy and paste the following into a gnome-terminal or konsole:/usr/sbin/alsa-info.shWhen the script completes it will pass you a URL. Please post that URL here.
Also, please copy and paste the following one line at a time into a gnome-terminal or konsole and post the output here.rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -qa | grep pulse
rpm -q libasound2
uname -a
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound

I ran the tests, the sound is not there.
I ran the alsa script and it didn’t give a URL…

Please try again. It works. …
And if you try again, and you still can not get it to work, then please run /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh with --no-upload option … ie please try:
/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh --no-upload
If you use the no-upload option, the information will be in /tmp/alsa-info.txt. Please copy the contents of that file to general pastebin - simplified internet collaboration and post the pastebin URL here.
Also, install “alsa-firmware” , reboot and test your audio.

I was just thinking to myself, I should try KDE4, so i did. And the audio worked!
Any ideas why this might happen?
for now, i guess i’ll have to use KDE4 when i need sound.

Honestly, I believe it because either your PC’s mixer settings are incorrect in KDE3, or there is an an app in your PC’s KDE3 which has seized the sound device, and is not letting it go. If it works in KDE4, it should work in KDE3.
When you ran the speaker-test that I asked you to run in KDE3, what errors did you see? Again, when testing one’s sound, an excellent basic sound test, is to copy and paste the following into a gnome-terminal or kde konsole:speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav
You should hear a ladies voice saying ‘Front left’, ‘Front right’ … 5 times.
What output did the lsof give?
Also, was the general pastebin - simplified internet collaboration site not working?

I can’t explain it. You should be getting sound.
It could be another mixer setting that you have muted that is resulting in no sound. I do not have your sound hardware, so it is impossible for me to go thru each one (via trial and error) to see which one, if any, it might be. I recommend you try that.
Good luck!

Thanks for the help, I’ll check one last time, but it looks like I’ll have to reinstall.

There are no issues with sound on my D600 in 11.1 KDE 3.5.10.
Check all the mixer settings (both in yast and in kmix). What sound chip does your laptop have? Mine is recognized as “Intel 82801DB-ICH4”, using snd-intel8x0 driver.
