LaTeX cannot be found in repos for Leap 16

Hi,
as the Agamer installer did not let me choose my applications, LaTeX is missing in my Leap 16 install now. When trying to call latex, the terminal tells me:

The program ‘latex’ can be found in following packages:
* texlive-latex-bin-bin [ path: /usr/bin/latex, repository: openSUSE:repo-oss ]

The same is true for pdflatex.
However, the “Discover” App cannot find it, although the repo-oss is activated. Trying

sudo zypper install texlive-latex-bin-bin

results in:

Texlive is (already) a LaTeX distribution in its own right ; there is no need to repackage it as an RPM to install it on Linux.

For openSUSE, you need to install this package (to be built locally using the makefile) to silence zypper regarding dependency issues:

Then simply install TeX Live as described in the CTAN documentation : https://www.tug.org/texlive/doc/texlive-en/texlive-en.html

TeX Live will be installed in /usr/local/texlive/YYYY or /usr/local/texlive/current (as desired) ; the binaries are directly accessible without any additional steps.

To update, run sudo tlmgr update --all.

So:

The solution is to declare that LaTeX is already installed; a later installation of TeX Live will therefore have no problem running on the system. The present package solves the problem for openSUSE Linux distributions.

Actually, https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:jsundermeyer does behave in a different manner.
BTW, https://build.opensuse.org/users/jsundermeyer is main developer/maintainer at TeXstudio (so, this is not just “some” home repo…).

I installed LaTeX on my Leap 16.0 simply by
sudo zypper in texlive
from the standard repo-oss which contains all the neccessary stuff like latex, pdflatex and lualatex that I am using.

Thank you all for your suggestions and explanations.

I now understand:

the earlier LaTeX distributions have been replaced by TeXLive
the openSUSE Linux has an outdated LaTeX version installed
two tweaks are necessary before TeXLive can be installed (" sudo zypper in texlive" leads to the same error as described above)

As I am not so familar with maintaining a linux OS, I need some more detailed instructions on how do the tweaks:
I could download the https://ctan.org/pkg/texlive-dummy-opensuse as zip archive and now have two .rpm files on my home but I don’t now how to add them to the new “Discover” App or install them otherwise.
For the second tweak I find an installation command on the “https://github.com/rolfn/texlive-dummy-opensuse” page but I don’t know how to download the git archive. Do I really have to create a git clone for these files, now?

I would be grateful for a step-by-step procedure.

As mentioned previously, the most up-to-date, that is 2026, version of TeXLive for Leap 16 is in Build Environment for TeX Live. Simply add this repository, open it in Myrlyn and ask Myrlyn to switch system packages to the TeX Live repository.

So ‘Myrlin’ is the usual software package manager. I thought it was replaced by the new ‘Discover’ app. And I never new it was called Myrlin as I had always opened it as a subfolder of Yast (which is gone now).

I added the tex live repository with the URL:

https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Publishing:/TeXLive/16.0/

This got me a warning about untrusted pgp key which I ignored.
But now I am stuck at the point:

“ask Myrlyn to switch system packages to the TeX Live repository.”

On the repository tab, there is now a list of four repos:

@System
Build Environment for TeX Live
repot-openh264 (16.0)
repo-oss (16.0)

Nothing is shown on the package list on the right.
If I search for texlive on the package Search tab, it tells me, everything is already installed.

As mentioned before, all you need to do on a clean installed Leap 16.0 is sudo zypper in texlive.
When you, however, tried to install single packages from different sources or repositories, you will probably end up in a mess.

So please show first
zypper lr -d

and second
zypper se -si texlive-latex-bin

When you click on Build Environment for TeX Live, the right hand panel should fill with a list of packages in the repository. Above this is the option Switch system packages. Assuming you have a list of packages in the right hand panel, selecting Switch system packages followed by Accept should start the process of downloading. Bear in mind that Leap 16.0 came out in 2025 and therefore has the 2025 packages; the Build Environment has the 2026 packages and so there will be a lot to upgrade.

Thank you john hudson. This shows really a lot of packages and the switch option is shown. I haven’t tried it yet, because I am a little worried that a system with the combination of 2025 and 2026 sources might give troubles with dependencies.
Will there be no problems with the daily updates for such a system?

@Luggi: My Leap is a pretty fresh install with nothing much added yet. zypper lr -d shows just “Leap”, the standard openSUSE repos and now also the build-environment-for-tex-live (from which I haven’t installed yet).
Your second command gives:

As written above " sudo zypper in texlive" gives the original error.

Agreed. Had no problem installing TeX Live from repo-oss but, if you check kpathsea in Myrlyn, you will see that repo-oss contains the 2024 and 2025 versions; only the Build Environment has the 2026 version. Chacun à son goût.

Please note that the 2025 TeX Live version is recommended for Leap 16.0 and presumably also for Leap 16.1. It is stable and should be used if you rely on a locked-down, enterprise-tested system where system integrity and zero-hassle package management via zypper are your top priorities.
If, however, you need one of the few newly introduced features—such as native math support via LuaLaTeX/MathML, graphic alt-text metadata, or PDF 2.0 output required by modern publishing—or simply want to test the new version, then give TeX Live 2026 a go.
