latest kernel on 11.4, and what are the differences between 11.4 and 11.3?

Hi guys,

installed 11.4 yesterday and wanted to check i’m running the latest kernel. uname -a brings up (and a little other thing before hand)

2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-02-21 10:34:10 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

is this the latest version. i don’t know how old 11.4 is, but there weren’t a great deal of updates. have added a few repos like packman etc.

kept /home as the same and what a difference that made. i used to do a fresh install every time, it saved just about all my settings!!! just needed a few more programs and stuff but nothing major.

really quick, clean install. just need to delete my old root partition for the old 11.3 system.

would also just like to know are there many differences between 11.3 and 11.4?

cheers guys

Ross

The kernel version in openSUSE 11.4 is at 2.6.37.1-1.2, just as you suggest. I am certain we will see more kernel updates in the future, but most updates right now are working on other packages in openSUSE and this is very normal for a new release. As for the kernel version, the 2.6.37 base is up to 2.6.37.4 (at kernel.org) which may be the basis for any new kernel updates here, but I don’t really know that for sure.

As for major differences between openSUSE 11.3 and 11.4 is of course the kernel 1st, 2.6.34 upgraded to 2.6.37, KDE went to 4.6 and we dumbed OpenOffice for LibraOffice and Firefox 4 beta 12 just to name a very few of the many changes. Like always, everything that can be updated was just before its release.

Thank You,

thanks for the prompt reply. from what i can gather though, there is no difference between open office and libre office…? just been having a little play around and downloaded a new icon theme and sorted the colours out. looking lovely now

LibraOffice is a fork of OpenOffice and started with the same basic open source code, so for now, few difference exist, though I do not claim to be the expert on that subject. They do seem real similar to me, that is for sure.

Thank You,

For what its worth, you could look at this page: NEW Users - openSUSE-11.4 Pre-installation – PLEASE READ and scroll down until you see the post/entry: openSUSE Documentation and Product Highlights and there are some links there showing new features in 11.4.
