I have a System76 Lemur Ultra Thin (lemu4) notebook PC and I use OpenSuSE 64 bit Tumblweed. I want to know is it safe for me to add the latest GNOME desktop environment and how do I do that? Currently, GNOME 3.6.2.x is available in a separate Tumblweed repository, but I have no idea if this is safe to do.
The last time that I tried to add the GNOME 3.6.x repository to OpenSuSE 64 bit Tumblweed, I rebooted my System76 PC and it said that the GDM failed to work properly and I could not login to my PC. I want to avoid that situation in the future which means that I must know that GNOME 3.6.x will work properly. How do I ensure that this will work properly if I add it?

This would be the way to add the GNOME repository:

Nevermind. I figured out how to keep the KDM login manager. I just added GNOME 3.6.2 for OpenSuSE 64 bit Tumblweed. I have not tested it yet, but I just patched my GNOME and I had to downgrade quite a number of packages. It should work, but I am in the middle of a huge CrashPlan+ initial backup and I still need to upload well over 115 GB of data to my account. So, I won’t be able to test GNOME 3.6.2 just yet.
Okay. I got it to work properly. I also had to do a su -, type in my root password, and do a zypper dup --from GNOME_Tumblweed and update my packages and switch vendors to Tumblweed.
I’m having problems with the latest version of GNOME. Every time that I lock the screen and I try to unlock it, it says that something went wrong and I have to log out of GNOME. How exactly am I supposed to update GNOME in the future? Do I do a zypper ref, zypper up followed by a zypper dup or do I do a zypper dup --from GNOME_Tumbleweed?
If you are using this GNOME repository, then please help me figure this out. Thank you.
I downgraded the gnome-screensaver package to 3.4.2 and it still does not work. Whenever I lock my GNOME session with the lock screen, it fails to unlock properly. I’m trying to do research on this matter, but it seems that the workaround that I just mentioned does not work properly.
After doing more research, I found a thread here that tells GNOME users to set the priority to 98 for the GNOME repository in YaST 2. I did this and I saved the changes. It improved the situation with zypper when I do package updating and upgrading, but I still can not unlock my screen successfully without encountering an error message stating that something went wrong and I have to log out again.
I’m going to wait until someone more knowledgeable will reply with answers to my dilemmas.
Hi
You shouldn’t have to set the priority as long as you have done a zypper dup --from and the packages have switched.
To roll back, all you need to do is disable the 3.6 repository and zypper dup --from <your tumbleweed repo> and switch back.
Not really sure what may be causing the issues in a mixed Desktop environment, I would recommend just picking one desktop and then work through the issues your having with that without, potential conflicts from other DE’s.
I downgraded to GNOME 3.4.2. It seems to be working properly, but I have not tried to unlock the lock screen feature yet. I think that I will test it tomorrow morning.
GNOME 3.6.2 does not seem to work properly with OpenSuSE 64 bit Tumbleweed yet. I think that I will wait until the official 3.6.x software packages hit Tumbleweed and I will do a zypper up and zypper dup.

Only use the openSUSE:Tumbleweed:GNOME repository if you know exactly
what you are doing, and can handle a broken system, and can recover from
it on your own without any outside help.
That repo is where I am building, and testing, the GNOME Tumbleweed
update, and it has had a number of problems already, one trashing my test
machine already.
You have been warned.
When it is all working well, I will ask for testers, and after they
verify it works acceptably, then the GNOME packages will be moved into
the main openSUSE:Tumbleweed repository for everyone to get
automatically. Then you will not have to do anything special to get the
update, it will happen normally.
