What does happen when you try? How is it that you are trying? This thread you started is labeled 15.4. Do you have both Leap and Tumbleweed on the same computer? If yes, which was first installed, which was updated last, and which worked correctly last?

What does “no access to console” mean? *SORRY! I meant Application Launcher.
There is absolutely no relationship between application launcher and console. Console has a special meaning, as does Konsole. Konsole is a KDE application that simulates a console, which is a text mode virtual terminal running in a framebuffer rather than an application running in a Plasma desktop.

Question: Would it be an idea to restart in ‘rescue mode’? I am reluctant to doing that of fear of losing
access to FireFox and Thunderbird.
Most likely such access would at worst be temporarily, whilst running in rescue mode, to return once the problem is solved, or in a subsequent boot that is not in rescue mode. Running in rescue mode can avoid breakage that obstructs repair efforts.

input/output before we can recommend what you should try.

My dad’s parents were both born in Norway. Is that where you are using those 9 desktops? Do any of the others (not including KDE/Plasma) work as expected? If yes, which do and which do not?*

You state your problem arose after an update, that would indicate a possible problem with your enabled repositories, we can’t confirm that until you show us which repositories you are using…

Whilst you still fail to post the output of:

LANG=C zypper lr -d

as repeatedly requested, yes, I fear you may end up on your own.

I have and need to have access to FireFox and Thunderbird. These two are the only ones I have access to, I have no access
to anything listed in the application launcher or anything else; hence ‘LANG=C zypper lr -d’ is out of reach.

I did not want to take a chance on loosing access to FireFox or Thunderbird due to a deadline on a report, so I did not turn off the PC or tried to execute
'LANG=C zypper lr -d ’ statement until yesterday, when I tried to get access to the console, but failed. I then
powered off the PC off leaving FF active, waited a minute or two, and powered on. Then I got access to
FF and the console, and ran the LANG=C … command yielding the output below.

At this point, I managed having only two programs of three (FF, TB, console) accessable in any (virtual) tabletop. Today I have three, the application laucher refuses to let me have four.
I will wait expanding on the theme until I get feedback on the 'LANG=C zypper lr -d ’ exercise.

I offer no guarantees this will result in fixing your problem, but if it was my machine (thankfully it’s not) this is what I would try…

Apart from:

All repositories in your list whose alias is in the form of “https-download.opensuse.org-8digithex” are returning:

404 (Resource is no longer available! The requested URL is no longer available on this server and there is no forwarding address)

They should be removed.

We don’t know what you may have installed from these two:

https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Backports:/SLE-15-SP4
https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/simotek:/base/15.4/

For the moment I would disable them, together with repo #25, (snappy)

Then perform a

zypper dup --allow-vendor-change

to see if that restores a working system.

Execute that from the command line whilst NOT logged in to the desktop environment.

If all is OK at that stage then you can re-enable the three disabled repositories.

I’m afraid some of your descriptions are a little vague, and in some posts contradictory. It’s difficult to establish your exact problem.

I suspect though you may still have other issues re the failure to launch applications.

Create a new test user (you should be able to use text based YaST from the command line if unable to lauch the GUI version) and see if the application launcher issue is still present.

Thanks to Paul for the suggestions! I have been trying to figure out how to proceed without doing a complete reinstall,
your reply came at the right moment.

A question I have been asking myself is 'what triggered the bizarre behavior of openSUSE I have seen? Is it caused
by something I have done, if ‘yes’, then when, what, and how?
Its conception was about the time of an upgrade. Could I have installed software (e.g.FireFox) twice at the same desktop
during upgrade?

In any case, I will test your proposed actions tomorrow.

You did not follow tannington’s instruction! Remove repo 1 up to 10 as they are from 1-click installations and are completely invalid (404 error). And that is why you get errors when you try to update with these invalid repos…

I hope I got it right this time. Anyhow, much remains unchanged. Good news is that I can utilize Firefox, Thunderbird, and konsole, and log out, however Libreoffice ‘writer’ will not load. It is definitely an improvement, but I dare not try to run openFOAM.

No, I went to bed (am at cancer treatment at the moment, that is a little disturbing). However, I did it a few minutes ago, did a shutdown, waited some minutes, and started: Problems persist!

OK… So assuming that your repositories are now correct and the zypper dup proceeded without errors.

You need to take this step by step, first establish if the problem is specific to your user or is system wide:

Create a new test user, login as that user and see if the problems still persist.

If you’re unable to create the user as the GUI version of YaST won’t start, follow these instructions:

Logout from the desktop session.

Switch to a virtual terminal

ctrl-alt-F2

Login at the terminal as your normal user

Obtain root privileges

su -

Start YaST in text mode

yast

From there you can create a new test user.

Having done that:

exit

to return to your normal user

Switch back to the graphics terminal

ctr-alt-F7

Login as your test user.
