laptop with memory card reader - kde

I was examining my ancient laptop and found a memory card reader(cameras, etc). I can’t find it in hardware. I’v not tried it on mswin. I tried plugging it in and doing an upgrade install. Nothing shows up. The camera has a USB connector. it should work. I think there is no special way to remove a memory card. So, i’ll just remove it.

Could use some help here.

Your explanation is confusing and lacks some key details. Need a clearer explanation.

Done, very late, done in a rush.

Toshiba Satellite A215-S5818 ← 32gb memory card

MSWIN viewed the memory card

opensuse leap 42.2 won’t recognize it.

I have regular USB interface, but I know that works.

Hi
What about the output from lsusb and/or hwinfo --usb for the Card Reader.

WIth no card plugged in, results shown. Don’t have it with me at the moment, later i’ll post with it.

Hi
OK, so dug out a Satellite A215-S7422 from the junk box…
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/329075/Toshiba-Satellite-A215-S7422.html

It has the same model card?
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/329059/Toshiba-Satellite-A215-S5818.html

On mine (via lspci) I see it’s a Ricoh R5C822 SD Card reader, using the sdhci_pci kernel driver (this is on my rescue 13.1 system on a USB device), plugged in a 32GB SD card and reads it fine… I would expect on 42.2 to also work then…?

Last three look like the hardware is detected?

What if I did an update install with memory card plugged in?

That would change nothing. Could be a dead card are you sure it works?? The contact on slot and card clean and not corroded??

Hi
OK, same as the one I have, in your post #3 you say the card works in the other OS, I’m assuming it’s on a different system? If so then as user gogalthorp indicated, maybe the card reader contacts are dirty (or damaged)… Oh I fired it up on a rescue Tumbleweed USB and again the card 8 and 32GB working fine.

I’v tried it on the same model on mswin. It reads as “secure storage” in the drive list. Opensuse 42.2 doesn’t give any notifications or in the drive list. If you need mswin hardware details, I can post it, might help.

Hi
So, since we both have systems that read a card, looks like it might be a hardware issue, rather then OS issue…

Toshiba laptop:
mswin reads card
opensuse leap 42.2 doesn’t read card

your laptop
opensuse leap 42.2 reads card. right?

Huh?? Looks like opensuse doesn’t have a driver for the hardware.

Hi
So this system is dual boot? I was under the impression it wasn’t?

So, the card readers are the same and using the same drivers.

What format is the card, exfat, ntfs, other? If exfat, then you need file system drivers, not hardware drivers.

openSUSE 13.1 and Tumbleweed live systems I tested it on (XFCE), but all are using the same driver, including your system.

Yes, but I need to find out how to encrypt the drive, so windows can’t read it. I’m hoping it doesn’t require another password.

FORMAT: fat32 NAME: “secure storage”

Hi
So don’t use vfat, exfat, ntfs, ext2 or ext3, use say xfs window won’t
see the filesystem…

The card is from a older digital camera. So, I can’t change the format.

Hi
Well you can’t encrypt else the camera won’t read it… don’t have it
plugged in, setup a udev rule so will only mount if you run a script of
some kind…

If data is encrypted, how can windows read it? That’s just a name.

So, it’s reads as a pci interface. How do I mount it? I understand blkid devices. udv rule?
