Running OpenSuSE 12.2 on my laptop I wish to use the VGA output to connect to the HDMI port on my monitor using an adaptor cable with HDMI to SVGA/VGA. I have no trouble connecting to a VGA monitor but the one I am currently using only has an HDMI input.
I also want to connect a PC with same o/s and only VGA output to an HDMI monitor/TV.

Hi
Since VGA is analog and HDMI is digital you would need a vga to hdmi
converter in between.

If your laptop has an HDMI output it s much better to use.
I have one of those converter mentioned by malcolm and it is more expensive
than the hdmi to hdmi cable. plus using the vga/dvi to hdmi you will need another
cable for the sound to hook-up with the t.v if you want to use the tv speakers.
Indeed this should be in the hardware forum area. I will move this to that forum area during the next 30 minutes.
I ask that no users post on this thread for the next 30 minutes while the thread move is in process. I need that time for this warning post to make it out through the NNTP gateway. You will know when to repost after I make one more post advising thread can be posted in again.
NNTP users, you will (within the next 30 minutes) find the continuation to this thread in ‘Hardware’ under the same title name, with me quoting part of the thread so that it can be identified.
This thread has now been moved from ‘applications’ forum area to ‘hardware’ forum area. It is open again for users to post in the thread.
NNTP users, I tried to copy the salient points from the old thread when it was in ‘applications’ forum area, but if you find this confusing, you can go back to the ‘applications’ area to find and read the old format of the posts. But please only reply in this new thread in the ‘hardware’ area.
Thank you Malcolm for your quick response. How foolish of me for expecting analog to plug into digital without a converter! My apologies for not using the hardware forum.

Hi
Another thought, your video card may support digital output
through vga, but you would need to check the system specs or send the
system manufacturer an email.
