Laptop Name on BT Home Hub 5.0

Hey!

I’ve searched the forums for hours and I can’t seem to find a solution.

I use the BT Home Hub Manager to check what is connected to the Wifi to ensure nothing malicious is happening when I noticed my laptops ‘Device’ name is “linux-wfai”.

I’ve tried changing the hostname using Network Services - Hostnames/DNS settings and that has made no difference. Am I going wrong somewhere? I turned off NetworkManager to ensure I can change the Hostname.

Anything else I could try or will it be something to do with the Home Hub?

Thanks in Advance

I think you will find that this is the HOSTNAME you were allocated (the last four characters randomly) when openSUSE was installed. You can in theory change this by editing /etc/HOSTNAME but it could have knock on effects for other programs.

If you have the skills, you could probably grep all the occurrences of the HOSTNAME in other programs and change those where it needs to be changed (one example would be that it will be in mysql.users if you have mysql running).

I think with the fact it might have a knock on effect I might just put up with it. It is just because I’m in quite an open community with plenty of people who can access the wifi signal. I’ve got it encrypted with a non standard (i.e I’ve changed it) pass key. Thanks for your help!
