Laptop + External 42" plasma getting res/rate right trouble

Hello, firstly haven’t played OpenSuse for years and 11.3 all went smoothly (almost inc my wifi, i could NOT get it to connect then magically it worked after a reboot).

Anyway, when using windows XP i would plug my laptop (Acer Travelmate 290E, some intel variant chipset) into my LG PDP42V7 based LCD TV. Right click desktop. Open display properties and enable the monitor. Once I got it set to the required (as per the TV’s user manual) 1280x768@60 all was good. Crispy shiny picture.

Anyway, the Display properties on OpenSUSE get me close. For starters it wont let me put it to the left of my desktop because that would make the total desktop wider than 2048 or something. Pain in the ass as that’s how I always had it in windows land. So I put it at the top. (but seems a bit arbitrary tho!)

Next it would only let me choose up to 1024x768 so I fiddled with cvt and xrandr but no matter what I try I can’t get 60Hz out of it. Always end up with 59.5Hz or something like that.

So my problem is (and the 59.5Hz may or may not be the issue) is that I have interlacing artifacts about 1/4 and 3/4 of the way down the screen. Which do suggest to me that it’s the vertical sync that’s not quite right. The TV itself only lets me set the vertical height, no kind of clock sync

This is a deal breaker for me. If I can’t get my telly properly hooked up I’ll be off back to XP. Anyone got any steer?

Hmm, upon further investigation it appears the native hardware resolution of the LCD is 852x480. OpenSUSE has managed to detect support for 848x480 but this mode also shows the tearing, will try and get a photo up later. If i could run it at the native res that would be brilliant.
