Laptop does not power off !!

Hi,

I have a TOSHIBA satellite laptop. until this week, it did shutdown and halt and power off with no errors, but after some updates it does not shut down!

when i click shutdown (or give the “shutdown -h now” command as root) it exits KDE, and the progress bar goes to the end. the hard disk turns off, but the system does not power off.

i can put more information here if anybody has a clue how to fix this!

tnx,

Anoosh

Tell us the last command executed before it hangs. To get rid of the green GUI
screen, press escape. That way you will see the shutdown commands.

One other thing - use ‘dmesg | less’ and page though the system messages. Do you
see any oops output?

i did what u said about the shutdown page.

every thing goes fine (there are lot of green “done” messages) and the final line is: " system will be halting immediately…"

but it hangs. :frowning:

one thing i noticed is that the omnibook module (which is my laptop driver for changing LCD brightness and …) is not working any more.

i have an impression this is a problem with KDE PowerDevil.

let me know your ideas,

Anoosh

As it gets to the “system halting” statement, everything has been stopped and
the disks unmounted. There will be no damage from manually powering off.

I don’t think it is a problem with the KDE Power Daemon - it has also been
stopped. These kind of problems are usually a BIOS anomaly. Is there a later
version for your machine?

what do u mean by “is there a later version of your machine” ?

if it means a new bios - NO.

i notice again that this problem is new. i am using openSUSE for almost a year and this problem has just occured from prevoius week.

Some Toshiba models (among other brands) have problems with acpi. I’m curious as to why it suddenly stopped working for you though. You may need to edit the kernel boot options in /boot/grub/menu.lst. Have a read of this thread:

here i found the error in my ACPI. this is “dmesg | grep ACPI” output

Undo those changes and live with it not turning off. As we determined before,
your disks are unmounted and manually turning the power off will not hurt anything.

the problem got one more step worse!

the omnibook module (which supported kernel to change brighness, …) does not work anymore ! either with a new compile and installation.

after googling, i put once acpi_irq_balance in kernel boot parameter, and here is dmesg | grep -2i acpi out put:
