I am using OpenSUSE tumbleweed and KDE desktop (plasmashell 6.7.5). I have a problem that everytime my laptop goes to sleep (or hibernate), it cannot resume operation on battery. If it happen, I need to plugin power cable, and then restart my Laptop. Additionally, after crash, LibreOffice/Firefox show crash recovery on next boot.
The problem does not occur if I connect my laptop to power cable.
In the following are the information on my system:
I have also updated firmware (via: fwupdmgr update)
Has anyone encounter the same problem?
Please kindly let me know if anyone have any advice, or if I need to report to bugzilla for instance (https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/)
I do not consider this as a bug. In all my days on laptops, I never used hibernation ( suspend to disk ), but always sleep ( suspend to RAM ). Why? Simply because resuming from hibernation is way slower than shutting down , booting, leaving the restore of the KDE desktop state to KDE itself and reopening the docs I was working on. I know sleep comes at a battery cost ( in my case ~15% / day.
Can you explain why you are hibernating instead of shutdown/reboot or sleep/resume?
Regarding hibernate mode on my laptop. I was just thinking that since sometimes I put my laptop in bag without completely shutting it down, hibernate could be option to prevent sleep mode and accidentally waking up, which may overheat my laptop. So I thought hibernate could be a better option there. Then again it is not critical and I can also use sleep mode and switch off hibernate.
Please note, however, that the same problem occur when I use sleep (not hibernate).
So after sleep, I need to plugin the laptop, then power on. After that, the laptop is rebooted.
Is it actually going to sleep then failing to wakeup? Or is it failing to go to sleep because of a crash?
First things first, after a crash, you should inspect the output of journalctl -b -1 to see what is happening.
Look for something like:
systemd-logind[####]: suspend requested from [process requesting suspend]
and
systemd-logind[###]: The system will suspend now!
and see if there is anything bad happening after the suspend request and when it is happening.
You can upload the output to https://paste.opensuse.org/ to share if you like, but be careful about potential personally identifiable info in the logs that you might not want shared (MAC addresses, IP addresses, user/hostnames etc).
Agree with @ikanotheokara, first source of clues is the logs and warning/error messages. Note that source of issue could possibly be different for sleep and hibernate.
Are your battery charge level generally handled correctly by linux? It’s a bit peculiar that your problems appear only on battery.
