Language support under Leap

In comparison to Tumbleweed is language support in Leap quite limited. For example, you can have Tumbleweed (nearly) fully in Occitan (with a Gnome or MATE desktop) while Leap will just give a few traductions (e.g.: Evolution can be fully in Occitan under Tumbleweed but is completely in English under Leap, even if you set oc_FR as your locale).
And so, for my information, I would like to know whether there exists a way to enlarge language support under Leap…

Sure, glibc language localisation is easy:

  1. Install:

  1. Get your sources e.g. from Tumbleweed /usr/share/i18n/locales/oc_FR and add it to Leap.

  2. Create the locale by running: localedef -f UTF-8 -i oc_FR oc_FR.UTF-8.

I tried your recommendation but it does not really help, the result at the end is the same: I get a mix of English and Occitan (with a majority of words in English) while on Tumbleweed the most words are well in Occitan. For example: “log off” should be “tampar la session”, or “poweroff” should “atudar”, or (in evolution) “mail” should be “corrièr electronic”, or (gdm) “password” should be “senhal”,…
By the way the file “oc_FR” generated by glibc-i18ndata is the same under Leap and under Tumbleweed.

It works on all my Tumbleweed and Leap hosts. For Occitan messages you need to set both variables properly. I use German language and English menus:

LANG=de_DE.UTF-8

Using for both oc_FR should give you what you want. More at Leap / Plasma Locales Configuration.

Unfortunately the conversion from vbulletin to discourse was less than perfect.

A little detail: I am using Gnome (and not KDE) but this is not important in this case.
I found the solution elsewhere: in Tumbleweed, there is a directory /usr/share/locale/oc that is not present in Leap.
I made a copy of this directory from Tumbleweed to Leap and now is nearly everything translated to the wished language.
But anyway, thank you for your time, I have learned new and useful things about localiization :slight_smile:

Yep.

I am puzzled. On my machines /usr/share/locale/oc does’t exist, neither in Tumbleweed nor in Leap. All machines have package glibc-locale installed automatically. It provides directories /usr/lib/locale/oc_FR and /usr/lib/locale/oc_FR.utf8.

Great! Keep it. If trouble starts again reconsider the above.
