Lan/internet connection

I’m new to linux, and have installed suse linux 8.0 to an older laptop machine. I’m pretty sure linux recognizes the pc network card connected to my home network, but I can’t seem to connect to the internet through the network’s broadband connection. Once I can connect, I should be able to upgrade the linux version, but just need some help with the first step: connecting thru the lan

Ok, do an

ifconfig

for me and tell us the output. Then i can be more than pretty sure if Linux recognize your ethernet card.

Why are you using SUSE Linux version 8? It’s older than I am… almost.
Okay, not really but close. Can you get the media from some other
location, like from wherever you received this old software?

Do other computers on your network have access when this one does not?
How do the network settings compare for your system? If you know what
they should look like post those and then post the output from commands
like the following (which may be completely wrong as I never used SUSE 8.x).

/sbin/ifconfig
route
cat /etc/resolv.conf

Good luck.

from konsole, I type in “ifconfig” and get:

linux:~ ifconfig
lo Link encap: Local Loopback
inet addr: 127.0.0.1 Mask: 255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope: host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric: 1
RX packets: 104 errors: 0 dropped: 0 overruns: 0 frame:0
TX packets: 104 errors: 0 dropped: 0 overruns: 0 carrier: 0
collisions: 0 txquelen: 0
RX bytes: 7176 (7.0kb) TX bytes: 7176 (7.0kb)

I’m using 8.0 because that’s the only version I’ve got. If I can get the internet connection working, I plan to upgrade to the new version. The other comuters are windows machines, and, yes, they connect to the internet thru the LAN

Also, in YaST using the configure function, it shows the PCMCIA card under already configured devices “Unknown PCMCIA network card Configured as eth-pcmcia-0”

Your SuSE 8.0 does not recognize your ethernet card (thats the network card)
A propper ifconfig would look like this

**eth0 Link encap:Ethernet Hardware Adresse 00:22:15:B8:0E:AD
          inet Adresse:192.168.2.4 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Maske:255.255.255.0

          Interrupt:27 Basisadresse:0x8000**

lo Link encap:Lokale Schleife
          inet Adresse:127.0.0.1 Maske:255.0.0.0
          inet6 Adresse: ::1/128 Gültigkeitsbereich:Maschine
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
          RX packets:213 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:213 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 Sendewarteschlangenlänge:0
          RX bytes:12219 (11.9 Kb) TX bytes:12219 (11.9 Kb)

Look at the bold part. Thats the ethernet card. Its missing in your output.

If its described as unknown it won’t work.

do I need to assign an IP address to the card? right now it’s set to automatic address set up via DHCP

I would suggest you get a new SuSE. You can either download openSUSE 11.1, which is reliable and stable, or the new openSUSE 11.2 which is still a little bit in Kindershoes!

If it would be supported, and you have got a dhcp server in your network, then you have to do nothing. Whats the name of that card? (manufacturer, model, chipset)

Just finished downloading 11.1 I think they reccommend burning to DVD, which I can do.

I’ll see how that works

Thanks for your help
