hello guys,
well i’m like u guys pretty much excited about the new 11.2 version and i think it is a lot better than 11.1. Far too low hardware issues this time around tring to set it up! Good work by the developers!
ok, so but since i’m here to get help with a problem and it is straight forward. My overall graphics performance is laggy. The menus don’t open swiftly, if i move or resize windows there is a fair bit of lag etc etc. as far as i think i have the latest drivers and updates installed. just donno what to do. btw, no desktop effect are enabled.
my config:
dell inspiron 6400
Intel Core 2 Due T5500 @ 1.66GHz, 2GB DDR2 RAM @ 667MHz, 120GB Harddrive, ATi X1300 Mobility GPU (64 dedicated + 64shared)MB, Intel High Def Audio.

The AMD website reports that your graphics hardware (along with other models) is now not supported by the current proprietary drivers, but only by the legacy driver, which will not work with openSUSE 11.2. That leaves you with the open source radeon driver. So, I’m wondering if thats the performance hit you’ve noticed…
Thanks guys for the responses. @pad-fragos : No it ain’t overheating. Even an overnight cold boot suffers from this problem.
@deano_ferrari : I was actually thinking about the same but didn’t do enough research in it! Well thkx for the link too. So, what are my options? Scrap 11.2 on my laptop alltogether?
I tried installing the ATi 9.3 driver on that link but the installation fails with the message a newer driver is already installed. The performance is really poor… it is equivalent to running a graphics intensive game on a low-mid range GPU.
The one thing that does baffle me is that the site says it has discontinued the new drivers for XP / Vista and Linux but Win 7 runs excellent on that system. And I assume Win7 is more graphics intensive than SuSE?:\
Yes, if graphics performance is important to you, then you have the following choices to make
Stay with openSUSE 11.X on your existing laptop, end enjoy being able to use the fglrx driver.
openSUSE 11.2 with new graphics hardware => new laptop capable of being supported by NVIDIA or ATI proprietary drivers.
I’m still deciding whether I will install openSUSE 11.2 on my ThinkPad because of this issue. Using the open source radeon driver is comparable to those with intel hardware using the very average intel driver.
Right, Intel drivers aren’t as good as they should be. The problem I have is 11.1 doesn’t work properly; audio / wifi problems. SuSE 11.0 seems outdated now! Maybe I’ll install it on my desktop only… thankfully I can upgrade (the hardware and software) there unlike my laptop.
