Hi there,
I am using openSUSE11 x64 and KDE4.1.x when I try to use Ktorrent or vuze after a while (2mins approx) my internet connectivity dies. For example, I begin downloading a torrent and after a while the status of the torrent is changed to stalled.
I am connected to the internet through a 54mbs wireless Netgear router. I get a fixed ip from the router and I forward the port used by Ktorrent.
KNetworkManager’s icons shows that it is connected but in reality it is not, trying to reconnect to the network also fails unless I reboot my pc. Just logging off and on would not fix the problem.
The current setup is flawless under windows vista.
Thanks in advance,
Eikichi
Any suggestions? How should I go about investigating this?
The recent updates that might fix this. Try doing an on-line update i got 2 ktorrent updates in the last 2 days

I tried updating but nothing… I haven’t received any updates for ktorrent. Yesterday I got a few updates but none about ktorrent.
Since it is a service which sends & receives packets I might need to add it as an exception of some sort to the firewall or disabling the firewall (I am referring to the openSUSE11 firewall)
you think it might help?

I have tried disabling the KNetworkManager and using the ifup etc but to no avail.
I don’t know what else to look…

Have you opened the ports in the suse firewall
Yast - Security - Firewall - Allowed services
Advanced Tab
add the ports you use in KT or Vuze and in your router
finish
Yes I have opened the ports on the SUSE firewall. If that was the case then just the Ktorrent would be blocked.
When I am using Ktorrent I lose connectivity in general, not just Internet (which would mean router blocked ktorrent) but LAN connectivity as well.
I am coming to the point where I feel desperate.

Hi!
Been having the exact same problem ever since I started using ktorrent. It’s not the firewall, believe me: it’s ktorrent. I’ve even disabled the SUSE’s firewall altogether (my router has one, and it’s enough) - to no avail. The only thing that surprises me is that, as you say, the same problem occurs with vuze!?!? With my router (a Belkin Pre-N wireless) the LAN doesn’t get affected as such - other machines connected to the router (be it wireless or wired) go on chuggling merrily as if nothing happened, they don’t even lose Internet connectivity or anything. Maybe that’s because they’re all Windoze boxes? There’s only one little piece of advice I can give you: when I looked into YAST I noticed there was a newer version of ktorrent available on the Packman repository. I was at a loss, so I downloaded it. I must admit that the symptoms have now subsided a tiny bit, although they’re by no means eliminated. I still lose connectivity from time to time, but it can now be restored simply by rebooting the machine - with the prior version of ktorrent I had to go into YAST, delete the wireless connection, reboot, create a new wireless connection in YAST, and reboot once more! Now, there’s a bit less hassle: one reboot suffices, and the connection will restore all by itself upon reboot, no need to delete and recreate it every time. Alas, the new version of ktorrent also introduced a completely new problem: the program stalls after a certain amount of time, in the sense that opening a menu may take 5 to 10 seconds - or minutes, on occasion. In such cases, I shut the program off and then reopen it after a while.
As always when dealing with P2P and home routers, the usual provisions apply: setting ktorrent’s connections to a minimum may help not overload the router - download just 1 torrent at a time, maximum 10 half-open outgoing connections, 5 connections per torrent, 10 connections globally, and so on - but one then asks himself, why the heck do I even bother to download torrents if I must limit the downloads to 3 kb/s>:(
Might as well revert to the good old trusty Spectrum ZX.:X
