Hi, i recently switched from ubuntu to opensuse42.1 leap kde within the last week, and so far i like it a lot better
and want to use it as my main os.Everything is working fine in it so far except 1 major issue ,no matter what i do i cant see
certain preview thumbnails of files, I’m an artist and i use krita to draw and i have literally hundreds of .kra files,
but nothing is showing up under dolphin settings to allow me to see previews/thumbnails of my files.
Ive installed thumbnailers which supposedly would allow me to see them , but the options arent showing up under dolphin settings
I made a forum post on the krita kde forums about my issues, and they told me to install the thumbnailers and i did that , but it is not working,
i tried restarting computer ,but that didnt work either.
The .kra thumbnailer is provided by calligra, which has not been ported
to KF5 yet.
It has been moved to kio-extras5 in KDE Applications 16.04, but Leap
42.1 only comes with 15.12.3.
You could upgrade KDE Applications from the additional KDE:Applications
repo (see http://tinyurl.com/bczda7s ).
Or use Konqueror or dolphin4 (the latter doesn’t have an entry in the
application menu, but you can start it via Alt+F2 or konsole), those are
still KDE4 based and can use the KDE4 thumbnailer provided by the
package calligra-extras-dolphin.
PS:
I somehow overlooked that you are looking for video thumbnails as well.
A video thumbnailer for KF5 is available in Leap 42.1, the package is called ffmpegthumbs (not ffmpegthumbnailer or kffmpegthumbnailer which are shown as installed on your screenshot, those are for KDE4, just like kde-mplayer-thumbnailer…)
Ive just been using konqueror , i find it to be even better than Dolphin anyway konqueror should be the default file manager.
while attempting to install the package ffmpegthumbs i get 41 warning conflicts
i have no idea what they mean, and this seems overly complicated to me
and id rather not install this and break my opensuse again
FYI, Konqueror just uses dolphin (embedded into its window) for the filemanagement functionality.
while attempting to install the package ffmpegthumbs i get 41 warning conflicts
These are no “conflict warnings”.
You try to install ffmpegthumbs from some extra repo, and this requires other packages to be switched to that repo as well. openSUSE’s package management does not switch packages to other repos automatically (for good reasons), so you have to accept it.
Judging from the version number, you use the unstable KDE repos though.
I would strongly recommend against that, unless you know what you are doing and can accept some breakage!
Better remove the KDE:Unstable repos and try again, ffmpegthumbs is included in the standard repos anyway.
too complicated, and trying to install dolphin gives me even more errors
Again, you are trying to install the unstable version 16.11.60git, which is a development snapshot/preview of the upcoming 16.12 to be released in December.
Remove the unstable repos, in particular as you say yourself it is “too complicated”.
I removed the unstable kde repositories, i got previes for video files working in konqueror and all other previews , But i still can’t seem to get previews for .kra files to work.
there is no option to allow it in preview settings , would i be better off using opensuse13 instead of leap ?
You need to install calligra-krita (NOT krita) to have a .kra thumbnailer/previewer for KDE4.
Sorry, I thought it was in calligra-extras-dolphin but this only contains service menus, my mistake.
there is no option to allow it in preview settings , would i be better off using opensuse13 instead of leap ?
Wouldn’t change much.
You’d still need to install the appropriate packages that contain the thumbnailers you want/need.
okay so i deinstalled my krita 3.0 ,and installed package calligra-krita, and was able to get .kra thumbnails in konqoreur ,but this calligra-krita came with the really old krita2.9 which i dont even use anymore.
what’s bizarre is now i can’t install package krita anymore which came with the new krita 3.0 that i was using prior to installing calligra-krita.
but now when i try to install krita3.0 i get all these warnings, conflicts or whatever you call them .which is weird becuase i was able to install package krita without having this warning before. So how can i get my krita 3.0 installed back ? i did try the appimage but do not like it becuase it comes with a big font + it has no os integration, icons/fonts/themes etc
and it looks ugly and out of place, on the krita forums i was told it was hard-coded to look that way.
All i want now is to simply have krita3.0 installed whilst having .kra previews on my opensuse leap , How can i achieve this? https://s10.postimg.org/tnocta355/Screenshot_20160812_112707.png
Well, it’s not that old… 2.9.11 has been released in February.
But yes, calligra-krita contains the KDE4 version of krita, which you need if you want to have a .kra thumbnailer for KDE4.

You cannot have both.
They would overwrite each other.
And krita 3.0 does not come with a thumbnailer any more.
As I already mentioned, to have .kra thumbnails in KF5 you need to upgrade your KDE Applications (kio-extras5 in particular) to 16.04.
kio-extras5 16.04 contains the .kra thumbnailer, that was previously part of Krita.
