Kontact 4.x summary without Akregator plugin

Hello openSUSE users!

I wrote about this issue some time ago but received no answer so I try again.

I have problem with Kontact since KDE 4.3.x (now I’m using 4.4.1). In earlier version (KDE 3) I had summary with calendar, holidays, notes and mail notifications in left column of summary and RSS (Akregator) channels in right column. I can’t do the same thing with new Kontact - left column takes all summary window I don’t have Akregator plugin in Summary configuration but Akregator is of course installed:

stalker@bgbackup:~> rpm -qa | grep akregator
akregator-4.4.1-203.5.x86_64

stalker@bgbackup:~> rpm -qa | grep kontact
kontact-debuginfo-4.4.1-203.5.x86_64
kontact-4.4.1-203.5.x86_64

stalker@bgbackup:~> ls -al /usr/lib64/kde4/ | grep akregator
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 43848 03-09 04:54 akregator_config_advanced.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 35520 03-09 04:54 akregator_config_appearance.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 35536 03-09 04:54 akregator_config_archive.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 35456 03-09 04:54 akregator_config_browser.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 31328 03-09 04:54 akregator_config_general.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 52496 03-09 04:32 akregatorkonqfeedicon.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 236488 03-09 04:54 akregator_mk4storage_plugin.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1077960 03-09 04:54 akregatorpart.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 39664 03-09 04:54 kontact_akregatorplugin.so

I looked into old Kontact summary configuration file:

stalker@bgbackup:~> cat /home/stalker/.kde/share/config/kontact_summaryrc
ActiveSummaries=kontact_specialdatesplugin,kontact_kmailplugin,kontact_todoplugin,kontact_newstickerplugin,kontact_knotesplugin,kontact_weatherplugin
LeftColumnSummaries=kontact_kmailplugin,kontact_specialdatesplugin,kontact_weatherplugin,kontact_knotesplugin
RightColumnSummaries=kontact_newstickerplugin

Now I looked into new configuration:

stalker@bgbackup:~> cat /home/stalker/.kde4/share/config/kontact_summaryrc
ActiveSummaries=kontact_todoplugin,kontact_specialdatesplugin,kontact_kmailplugin,kontact_knotesplugin,kontact_akregatorplugin
LeftColumnSummaries=kontact_kmailplugin,kontact_todoplugin,kontact_specialdatesplugin,kontact_knotesplugin
RightColumnSummaries=

Sooo… kontact_newstickerplugin has changed name to kontact_akregatorplugin, as I see in listing from /usr/lib64/kde4. I closed Kontact and manually added kontact_akregatorplugin to configuration file. Now it looks like this one:

ActiveSummaries=kontact_specialdatesplugin,kontact_kmailplugin,kontact_todoplugin,kontact_akregatorplugin,kontact_knotesplugin,kontact_weatherplugin
LeftColumnSummaries=kontact_kmailplugin,kontact_todoplugin,kontact_specialdatesplugin,kontact_knotesplugin
RightColumnSummaries=kontact_akregatorplugin

I opened Kontact again and… no Akregator channels in right column. I opened configuration file once again and saw that kontact_akregatorplugin dissapeared - now the last line in this file looks like this:

RightColumnSummaries=

Summary configuration window looks like on attached snapshot:

Can you please explain it to me and help me to tame new Kontact?

Cheers!

I suppose it is a bit frustrating when nobody answers your question as happened earlier. But that is not illogical in a Forum like this, when nobody thinks (s)he can help, (s)he will not post.

Now I post, but it will not help very much I think. To begin with, I used Akregator in KDE 3, but not in the Summary. That means I do not even know how one did this in KDE 3.

I am also on KDE 4 now and have a lot of frustrations about things not working as before. I am afraid this is one of them. The only thing I can do is giving this URL: Index page • KDE Community Forums

Thank you Henk for your elegant answer :wink: Yes, you are right: if I can’t help or don’t know solution - I don’t reply. Simply :slight_smile:

I’ll try on KDE forum too, but I’m afraid it’s openSUSE’s KDE compilation related issue, so I asked here…

I doubt if this has anything to do with openSUSE adaptions. To me this seems to be completely internal to KDE, even only to those KDE products that integrate in Kontakt.

I found with several other KDE 4 products that functionality I used for years in KDE 3 was simply lost in KDE 4. Sometimes postponed to the future. Now I can understand that for some obscure usage, but often these features were are essential imho.

i have no idea if it your problem is unique to the openSUSE
implementation of KDE or not…but if you think it is perhaps you
should tap into the openSUSE/Novell devs…

unfortunately they are VERY seldom here…

instead they hang out on mail lists and IRC, find links to both those
media here: http://en.opensuse.org/Communicate

the only other possible way i know of to interact with them are via
bugzilla <http://en.opensuse.org/Submitting_Bug_Reports> or FATE
<https://features.opensuse.org/>
