I’m unable to connect my office laptop to my home wireless network using KNetworkManager. When I click on the greyed-out world, the network manager cannot see the network at all (i.e. the signal strength is 0%). The laptop is in the same room as the router, and my other laptop (running openSUSE 11.2) works OK.
I don’t think that the issue is the wireless card - I’ve just checked at the office and have been able to connect to its wireless network.
The only thing that I can think of having done is that I changed the wireless channel on the router. Will this have affected KNetworkManager? If so, how do I make sure that KNetworkManager reflects the appropriate channel?

Have you installed the latest updates? If yes, check in Yast2 Network
Devices—>Network Settings—Global Options and you will find that it
has been reset to “Traditional Method with ifup”. You will need to
change to “User Controlled with NetworkManger” (and probably a restart
may be a good idea).

What is different other than the channel? What is the same? In
particular, are the SSID values for the two networks different? Did
you use the NM applet to create a connection for the home network?
Also tried the command when my laptop was plugged in to the router (and on-line - hence this e-mail from my laptop) and got the same result as above.
In the interim, I’ve changed the router settings to what they were, deleted the entire wireless connection - no joy.The laptop does not even see the network name.

The only thing that makes any sense is that the wireless switch has
been turned off since you were in the office. Does the output of dmesg
show anything on this matter?
Since your message, I deleted the connection and tried again. This time, I could see the netwok but, despite entering the key correctly (yes, I’m sure:)), I couldn’t get on. The network has since disappeared from my list of available networks.
I seem to be plagued with problems that others don’t have!I have no problems with the 11.2 KNetworkManager (rotfl!) but I have problems with 11.1 KNetworkManager(:’().
The problem only exists with my home network - the office wired and wireless both work OK. This is just a recent phenomenon. I deleted the connection completely, restarted it and then I could see the network but not connect to it. After setting up the security key etc, I can’t even see the network.
That reminds me of a problem I had a few years ago.
I was having so much trouble connecting to my home network, and then, after a few days of checking and changing settings, I remembered I had set the router to only allow specified devices to connect. Then it took a few seconds to plug in to the router, log in to admin and un-check the box.
I’ve just changed the router channel back to what it was and set up the connection…it now works on both the office and home laptops…
I guess I’ll just need to wait to see whether the channel change gives me the problem of the network dropping on the home laptop (which is why I changed the channel in the first place).
I’d still like to know why the channel change, which was automatically picked up by the home laptop (running 11.2) isn’t picked up by the office laptop (running 11.1)…
Hey guys, I hope its not too late to say that I’m having the same problem. I’ve checked and rechecked to make sure that I put in the correct WPA code, which I am, and I’m sure my wireless switch is on, and when I use the sudo /usr/bin/iwlist scan, it comes up saying “No such file or directory.”
Can anyone please help?

Please start a new thread, preferably in the wireless forum. When you
do, please tell us more about your device and your configuration. The
“Network is down” message can happen for many reasons from missing
firmware to using the ifup method of controlling your device and never
giving it an ifup command. Go to the stickies in the wireless forum to
learn how to determine what device you have and how to detect missing
firmware.
