KNetworkManager connection problems

I have an open WEP wireless internet connection with a security key. KNetworkManager can never obtain an IP address from my wireless router, but I know that the router works because Windows can connect correctly and Ubuntu’s NetworkManager can connection correctly. Does anyone know what is happening? KNetworkManager just asks for my security again and again and again after it fails to connect.

If you are using NetworkManager, then you need to use the applet to select the
“Manage Connections” option and enter the hex key for WEP there. In the KDE
form, putting the encryption key into the applet does not work.

Then on KDE and KNetworkManager how can I successfully add the encryption key to connect to the internet?

Click on the kNM applet in the lower-right corner and click on “Manage
Connections”. In the screen that comes up, select wiress, then “add”, and add
your connection including the ESSID and the encryption. For WEP it must be the
hex key. For WPA/WPA2 it will be a passphrase.

i had the same problem, where can i find the hex key. I put the wep where it said and then it just kept asking for an hex key altought the field already had one i dont know where it came from.
ultimately i reinstalled suse, twice, the internet is working again but i really don’t know what happen

Have you tried GNOME? Wireless is less flaky using that GUI.

The maintenance console of your AP/router will tell you the hex key.

As WEP can be broken in 5 minutes or less, I suggest that you go to WPA or WPA2,
even better, encryption.

To All:

I have the same issue and found that using the tradition method (ifup) works with no hitches. As for using wep, I know that is unsecure as hell, but am stuck since I have a bridged wireless network to support a satellite receiver and wep is the only protocol that the wireless bridge supports.

I’ll try what is suggested here, about entering the key in the manage connections section, but I don’t think that worked for me either.

Mike

I tried what was suggested and it still does not work, I am going to report this as a bug. At least they fixed the crashing.
