i updated my laptop yesterday, and now i’m unable to connect to the internet wirelessly.
the network manager icon that was once in my system tray is no longer there, and i have been unable to add it back.
more importantly, when i try to run network manager i get the following:
“KNetworkManager cannot start because the installation is misconfigured. System DBUS policy does not allow it to provide user settings; contact your system administrator or distribution. KNetworkManager will not start automatically in the future.”
i’m completely lost, especially because network manager was working fine yesterday, and all day today until a few hours ago. i made no manual configuration changes, so i have not clue what the thing is talking about.
…i’m now stuck in a corner of my house, chained to my router!
will someone PLEASE help me out?!?

I would ask you to go into YaST / Network Devices / Network Settings / Global Options Tab and set the bullet for “User Controlled With NetworkManager” if not selected as this is the normal way to use NetworkManager. Once set, you may have to run NetworkManager manually as a normal user the first time to see it in the icon tray, but after that it should load automatically. For wireless operation it is said that you need to be running Kwallet, to keep your passwords. So, make sure that this is running also. If you just can not get the NetworManager to run, it may have been left in an invalid state, so try these two commands in a terminal session, such as Konsole.
the YaST setting is already on “user controlled”. in fact, it has been on this setting since updating to 11.2.
also, i’ve never had to use Kwallet, and everything has always worked fine. i see no need to use it now, unless it can be explained to me that whatever changes that have apparently been made to my KNetworkManager absolutely require me to use Kwallet.
since i restarted my system earlier, the KNetworkManager icon that was in my system tray disappeared, and the message posted above is what i get when i try to run KNM through any method…so, should i then do the commands?
but, before i do the terminal commands, could you explain a little about what these commands will do?
besides my sensitivity to all things “root”, i’m also trying to learn as much as possible…
Yes, I would then try to execute the two sudo commands, which require the root user password. If you run the second command shortly after the first in the same terminal session, you may not be asked the root password a second time.

when i try:
“sudo rm /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state”
…it tells me that the file/directory does not exist.
and i when i try to run NM from terminal i get:

Do you want me to delete your similar post in the Network/Internet subforum? Because doubleposting generaly generates a mess. People answer to it without knowing other answers in the other thread. In the end even you may not be able to sort things out. Alsoit annoys people when they spend time in an answer and then find the same question again somewhere else.
yes, please delete whichever one is most out of place. i assume that would be the Network/Internet subforum, since my actual connections seem fine…KNetworkManager is simply not operating.
…however, no one has responded to either, really.
this is a serious problem for me, because i am currently unable to connect to the wireless at all. neither through KNM nor ifup methods.
(never tried this before).
