don’t know where to start looking first. but, knetworkmanager works fine until i plug in eth0. after that wireless is no longer useable; even after I remove cable, reboot, and etc.
So knetworkmanager works fine with WLAN and doesn’t work any more when you plug in a network cable?
Have you checked /var/log/messages for any suspicious messages?
Yep. after I plug the cable in the first time it just kills the ability to use networkmanager after that.
Messages didn’t give much help here’s what I got in messages. this from after I disconnect eth0 to plugging the wlan adapter in.

What is the output of
ifconfig
?

yes I have… It see’s everything as being controlled by knetworkmanager…
When I do an IFCONFIG nothing happens. That’s to say no packets, IP, or connectivity. I’d try to use yast to setup the config, but it doesn’t have the option for me to use WPA(TKIP). 
Have you tried using Kinternet???
It’s for dial-up…
