KMyMoney documentation?

I installed KMyMoney 0.8.9 from the openSUSE 11.0 downladed DVD using YaST. The problem is that no help files were installed so I can’t learn to use it.

I’m new to openSUSE so I probably did something wrong. How do I get the Help files installed?

In searching this forum, I found a post that indicated no help files were a “feature”, not a bug, because programmers hate writing them. Surely (and hopefully) they jest.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

Googling kmymoney documentation found this and hope will help
KDE Wiki : KMyMoney

Thank you for the link.

KMyMoney seems to have a pretty good manual in .pdf format on their website. It indicates that the “Help” button should work. Mine doesn’t.

Is there some trick to installing the help files or should they be included automatically?

You’re welcome
As for your question can’'t answer you for I am not using it.Hopefully someone who has the knowledge will chime in and guide you with it.

You can get 0.9 for openSUSE and that certainly has the documentation available from Help. One possibility: all the KDE documentation relies on having Beagle running and the KDE Help indexed. Have you switched off Beagle or never indexed the KDE Help?

In the past I had troubles where the help files were placed when I installed using the source files. Maybe you could check where yours are located. Mine are at

/opt/kde3/share/doc/HTML/en/kmymoney2

If yours are not located there, that’s most likely your problem and I’d say that what you installed wasn’t configured correctly when it was compiled.

You could try to subscribe to the kmymoney mailing list and ask there how to correct it. The developers are active there and pretty good with giving help.

Thank everyone for the help. I was running the downloaded version of openSUSE 11.0 with KDE 4. I had done a lot of “toying” with it and probably brought the help file problems on myself.

When the boxed DVD came, I blasted all the partitions and made a clean install using KDE3.5. KMyMoney installed easily and the help files were available with no problem.

Two Differences between the first installation and the second:

  1. KDE 3.5 instead of 4
  2. Beagle was not running (i think i turned it off and didn’t know how to get it back) in the first and is in the second.

The .pdf help file link is http://kmymoney2.sourceforge.net/kmymoney-user.pdf

I can’t say enough good things about openSUSE 11.

I’m on 10.3. Planning on installing 11.1 in a couple days when it goes
gold-master. KDE 4 may take some getting used to though. <g>
