On my new install of 11.1, KMix is showing the “Mute” option ticked. I am unable to untick this, yet have seen no errors.
Having searched on the forums and installing the one click non-OSS software and rebooting, I’m still not able to get sound working. The really strange thing is, sound worked perfectly with the Live version of the distro this afternoon prior to install.:\
Here are the bits of info which are asked for in other threads. I hope they are what’s needed. Any help would be very welcome
At the risk of my asking a silly question, what are you doing to try and untick it? If using KDE3, please confirm you attempted a simple “Right click” (and not left click) with your mouse to unmute?
caf4926 - All I have installed is the vanilla copy of openSUSE with any and all automatically flagged updates, along with some non-OSS additions for DVD, mp3 playback and flash. I’m not sure how to check which version of KDE I have installed. I’ll go see if I can figure it out.
oldcpu - Not a silly question! I work in IT, so am used to asking such things of end users. The right click was the first thing I did, and I have also gone through all the KMix settings, to no avail.
If it hadn’t worked with the Live running, I could understand. But, as it worked with nothing extra installed, I’m very confused.
Then from Software Management, filter by repo, select the new repos and do update all unconditionally in these new repos, start working with the desktop one, you may not have much in the other two.
To use kde3
Software Management - Patterns
add kde3base and desktop
Disable auto login so you can choose to login with either kde4 or kde3
Ok, I’m currently logged into KDE3. I tried the repo and updated something like 700Mbs, but it hasn’t helped. Mute is still ticked and refuses to go away.
Looking through the System Logs, I noticed a few instances of the following error. This means nothing to me: linux-dnzv pulseaudio[3695]: module-hal-detect.c: Error getting capability: org.freedesktop.Hal.NoSuchDevice: No device with id /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/platform_parport_pc_632
Having googled this error, I’m no wiser. It looks to be an indicator of a problem with pulseaudio, but I’m just not tech savvy enough with Linux yet to work out what to do to fix the issue. Very frustrating.
To get sound working perfectly (even though mute is STILL ticked!), all I did was: listed all the mixer controls for my soundcard and manually ticked mute on “mic” and “front mic”. That’s all I changed and voila, sound is fine. How strange.
Is this a bug? Perhaps one of the updates did work and this was just the final step? I don’t know.
Again, thanks for all the help and suggestions. I’m just so happy to get the distro working 100% lol!

@lealoc

It haben to me to many time .
Good luck it takes time
Mike
That what I told you,I try to save you 1 1/2 - 2 1/2Hrs extra work.
That is nice it works now.
You did save me a lot of time Mike. I re-read your post and decided I must have missed something really obvious. And like you said, just messing with the settings eventually solved the problem. It still doesn’t make sense that muting the mic would enable the sound, but I’ll know for next time hehe!!! Thanks again.
I’ve been puzzling over exactly the same issue on an Inspiron 1501; Kmix mute won’t uncheck, but as soon as I checked mute on the front speaker slider it started working. Much fun…
