Kmail translation

Hi,

i’m using opensuse 11.3, kde 4.5 and kmail 1.13.5 but kmail is still in english while the rest of the system is in french.
What’s needed to have it in french please ?

here (a) you can see that kde 4 packages for translation are installed .
What’s missing ?

Thanks

~> kmail --version
Qt: 4.6.3

The translation reside in files with the .mo extension, typically under
“/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/”.

See if you can find the file there, or in some other directory. Probably named “kmail.mo”. If it
doesn’t exist and it is not in another rpm (use webpin to search for it), report the bug to bugzilla.

If it does exist, but you get the program in English, report that bug.

My webpin finds the file in package “kde3-i18n-fr” for 11.2. I suggest you list the contents of your
kde4-l10n-fr to see if it contains it.

I can’t see the kmail.mo file in /usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/
Nor in kde4-l10n-fr (rpm -ql kde-l10n-fr )

It is not either in /usr :

fabrice@linux-alzh:/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES> find /usr | grep kmail.mo
find: `/usr/lib/mozilla/extensions’: Permission non accordée

Did you say webpin gives the package which contains kmail.mo ?
For opensuse 11.3 searching for kmail.mo gives no result

I see there is a reply to this from manchette, in the web forum, but it hasn’t got to the nntp
interface where I write. It posted at 4:30, I assume it means 12:30 CET - so the server outage has
eaten it. Dissapeared. I’ll copy manually the response.

That’s bad,.

I assume there are other kde files in /usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES, that only the kmail one is
missing?

It does for 11.2:

Elessar:~ # webpin kmail.mo
50 results (50 packages) found for “kmail.mo” in openSUSE_112

  • kde3-i18n-es: Spanish Translations for KDE
  • 3.5.10 [suse-oss]
  • kde3-i18n-fr: French Translations for KDE
  • 3.5.10 [suse-oss]

But now that I remember, webpin for oS 11.3 was broken.

I believe you have found a bug. Report it in Bugzilla.

It looks like according to what i was told that kmail and kde 4.5 has a translation problem linked with the packaging, this was mentionned in opensuse-kde.
I haven’t checked but i guess it does not need a new bug report (well after checking with "kde 4.5 kmail trnaslation i cant see any summary linked with this :frowning: , i’ll repair this).

Bonjour manchette_fr,

I had the same problem with KDE 4.5 and german and english. The reason could be, that kontact (including Kmail) is still version 4.4.5 instead of 4.5.

I reinstalled KDE 4.4.4. (qui, c’est ne pas une solution).

Salut

Michael

maybe, here’s what i have :
kontact --version
Qt: 4.6.3
KDE Development Platform: 4.5.00 (KDE 4.5.0)
Kontact: 4.4.5

Notice that you might be able to use the translation files of one version with another. This work
best if the files are recompiled.

If you need the translation, I would have a look at the source rpm of the version you want, search
for the plain text files of the translation, files with the .po extension, compile those you want,
and simply copy those over to your /usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES directory. This is done using
msgfmt.

Using an older translation is possible, but can be more complicated. First the po file has to be
merged with the pot file (the English master source), then converted to .mo. The problem would be
that new or modified strings would not be translated.

Or wait till they correct the bug…

This KDE: Week 26-32 « My KDE week may have the answer to the problem - you need language + country for KMail to recognise it.
