Kmail problems

I use kmail for my emails and since I have a small network with 4 computers the files are located on a server. I copied all the files in the folder ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail on to the server and edited the kmailrc file with the new path to the server. It worked very well for years - through several upgrades - until I upgraded to version 12.1. Now I get the error message “Kmail encountered a fatal error and will terminate now. The error was: Failed to fetch the resource collection.”
And then the window closes. So obviously the configuration has changed but I couldn’t find out what had changed. I changed back to the old kmailrc file and copied all the files from the server into its original place but it made no difference. Same error message. I would very much appreciate if anyone could tell me what has changed and how I can access my emails.

I guess with upgrading to opensuse-12.1 you upgraded KDE to a version higher
than 4.7 for the first time ? Then the base of kmail has changed for you:
kmail2 uses akonadi as a cache. If this is the case you might want to check
out the documentation.

Besides: I dont understand why you make the hassle to copy the mail from
server to client manually. Isnt that exactly what the mail client is meant
to do ? Access the mails stored on the server from the client side ?

Thanks for the reply, arkascha,
Yes the KDE is 4.7.2 - the default in the 12.1 install. First I have to say that my file server is a Raidon unit with 2 hard drives running RAID1 but no mail server facilities. That means if I would open open the emails on any computer (POP3) they would end up in this computer’s inbox and not be available on any other computer. That’s why I have set it up that way that the email folders are on the server and every computer can access the emails from there. And since the mail client reads directly from the server there are no mail files on the local machine. To try to get it working I set up the local machine like a stand alone computer but it needed of course al the folders like inbox, etc… Therefore the copying.
Anyway, In the meantime I have managed to open up the files on the server with kmail and configured it but still I can neither send nor receive. That is odd because I could do this with the same settings on the previous version. No clue so far from the documentation. Account is correct, username and password are correct (I can telnet with those into the ISP) so the question is why. I suspect since I have changed the path maybe I have to separately change it for the send and receive command? If so where? So far couldn’t find anything.

There seem to be a few quirks still in this version of Kmail, e.g. one Identity name of the email addresses has an x as last letter. As soon as I add the x the OK button greys out and cannot be used. So in the identity I have to leave the last letter off.

OK I managed to solve the problem and I am now running Kmail2

  1. I opened kmail2rc and added under [General] folder=/path to folder
  2. Under System settings – Personal information I changed the paths to the same as above for all the mail items. I haven’t changed the setting to the addressbook yet as the other computers still run under version 11.4
  3. Previously - and i don’t know since which version the folder kmail (e.g. ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail) had a subfolder mail but the email addresses in the form “username@internet.provider:POP3:internet.provider:110” as files (I don’t want this bloody face to appear but don’t know to turn it off - shuld be “:” and then “POP3” without space) . Now it seems these addresses need to be inside the mail subfolder. Obviously this is because under 2) I put the same path there but since I only put one path into kmail2rc that seemed to be the safest bid. Anyway everything is now working under 12.1 and I now can upgrade the other computers. Then I have to sort out the address book but now this should not be a problem any more.
