KMail keeps prompting constantly for an account password

Greetings,

I have been starting using Kmail and the program constantly keeps prompting me for an account password.
I think all adequate settings have been done correctly.

Thank you in advance for any helpful piece of advice to get rid of that very annoying issue (in case of several account it is practically impossible to proceed this way).

Hello,

I had the same problem some time ago.
In my case, the issue resulted in KDE_Wallet being disabled entirely or blocked by Kmail.

You should go to System Settings - User Management and see if KDE Wallet is enabled. In addition to that, when you add a new account for the first time, you are being asked if you want to store the passwords and if yes, are prompted to create an encryption key. If you don’t do that, than passwords will not be stored and you have to enter like again like every 5 minutes.

Reason of this is, that KDE_Wallet is the program, that stores all passwords on the system in a secure place. If KDE Wallet hence is disabled or has no access to a particular application, using authentication, it cannot store the password and you have to enter it again and again. This has nothing to do with the actual store checkbox, which you select to store your password. If KDE Wallet has no access or no key exists - or is disabled entirely - you can check the box to save passwords and it still won’t do it.

You could probably give it try: Uncheck the checkbox / option to store the password. Apply changes. Check the box again and apply changes. If KDE_Wallet has no access or is disabled, you get a warning message, telling you that KDE_Wallet is not active and that it is necessary to store the password.

Now, in my case KDE Wallet was setup properly and worked, but due to a hasty click, I closed the Window, asking to create a key. I never got that windows back to show. Even after removing the account and readding it, I was not prompted to create a key. Deleting the Kmail configuration file fixed it for me. This might probably be a bug, as the Popup did mention that KDE Wallet had to be active, but not prompted again for the key.

Would have to check in your case, how it works for you.

Hope it helps,

Ben

I agree absolutely: if KWallet hasn’t been set-up before starting the KMail configuration then, particularly with Leap 42.1 and KDE Plasma 5, the e-Mail server passwords will always be asked for.

I thank you for your clarification. Now I have an idea of the system behaviour.
I think the described correlation between KWallet and Kontact is the culprit here. I will try to follow your recommendations.
