I have OpenSuse 11.4 (running the KDE version that is installed with this)
I have installed KLAMAV via Yast version klamav-0.46-31.1.i586.rpm
I open KLAMAV and select the HOME FOLDER check box, subsequently it enables ALL the sub folder checkboxes
I select SCAN button
Result > the information below the result windows shows “Files Scanned: 0”…
HELP? am I missing something that needs privileges or something? Or is this not a good application to use for OpenSUSE 11.4? Be gentle with me guys… I’m fairly new in working around Linux… OH and thanks in advance…
Ok, with that statement… I do have 3 other computers in my household that DO run windows and I’m constantly doing things between them. Sending file, sharing file etc… would this not warrant putting a anti-virus program on the linux? As I’m not as fluent on linux information as most, I figured that i would need that against the other windows machines… as a ‘just in case’ backup… I know that Linux has, by far, only a fraction of the virus’ as what is against windows.

I use Linux but in work I have to share with windows
I don’t use anti-virus in Linux to protect the windows PC’s,though I can see it might have some advantages. But IMO, Clam/Klam is not the best out there and whilst it might have it’s uses, I think most windows machines will have the protection they need.
I do have personal windows installations, though I seldom use them, I have never yet had a Virus cause trouble, though I have had AVG pick one up in a download.

i think if you can access (read/share) your window’s machine’s drives
over the network you could run av from your linux machine (but i have no
idea how you would then clean those machines of what you found…you
need a windows guru to help there)
and, if your linux machine is acting as a mail server for the win
machines it would be possible (and smart) to subject mail inbound to the
win machine to a av look see prior to letting bad stuff into the win boxes…
hmmmm…i don’t know if klamav is good to find root kits, key loggers
and etc which might already be resident…hmmmm…i should stop now and
let a win guru help you…but, before i do i’ll just mention that klamav
does not look for linux viruses, and therefore can not find any, because
there are none known to find…
there ARE linux root kits and linux botnets, but so far they are not
installed by viruses, but rather by users who install Trojan software
with bad stuff inside (avoid that by always using trusted source that
are crypto signed…and, always use the openSUSE repos if at all
possible)…or by folks who don’t know how to secure a linux box and let
the cracker in…(a few ways to slow them down is to have STRONG
passwords, a root password different from all user passwords, never log
into the GUI as root, never browse or make any contact outside as root,
open as few ports and services as possible, and put a hardware router
with natting firewall between you and the all the bad guy…
btw: i’ve not had any av software on any of my computers since '95…
(but, i have no win machines on my local net)

Correct me if i am wrong,does it mean that as long i use openSUSE/GNOME then there is no threat of virus or malware infection even when i use certain mono base applications like tomboy,banshee,f-spot ?
We can’t say that categorically, as only you are managing your system and we have no idea how safe you play things.

The fact that it’s openSUSE/Gnome is of little matter.
I suppose anything is possible
But this isn’t really a plea for help. If you want to make conversation on the possible security holes in the Linux OS. I suggest you start a thread in Soapbox.
This looks like there is no virus database available.
Install “clamav”. Then enable the freshclam daemon – YaST > System > System Services (Runlevel).
If the klamav configuration is bad; close klamav, and delete “~/.klamav” before restarting Klamav.
Klamav is a KDE3 program. It requires kdelibs3 and a kde3-i18n- language installed.
Under KDE4 there is no Dolphin or Kmail integration (klammail appears useless), no drag-and-drop or context/right-click scanning. But you can select and scan a directory/folder.
Despite having no practical use in defending the host system, it could be useful for identifying viruses in infected files. Checking email is better done with Clamav within the mailserver or using Clamav in a Kmail filter.
