kinternet is installed but I can't find it

I have downloaded and am running Suse 11.1 and Yast shows kinternet version 0.75-220.75 to be installed. I cannot see how to run it except from the terminal. The terminal accepts kinternet as a command and replies

kbuildsycoca running …
Reusing existing ksycoca

and then hangs.

I see from other posts that the Yast Modems wizard will setup connections, but it won’t do anything for me, is this because I have a SpeedTouch 330 modem?

I want to use kinternet as part of a desperate attempt to get an internet connection using the SpeedTouch modem. I have installed the drivers and a dial script following instructions on the helpful site “www.linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/index.html
.

Running “pppd call speedtch” shows signs of working. I get the following messages from /var/log/messages

Jan 13 18:53:45 linux-1vny SuSEfirewall2: Firewall rules successfully set
Jan 13 18:53:45 linux-1vny pppd[6542]: Script /etc/ppp/ip-up finished (pid 6543), status = 0x0

To me this seems to imply I have an internet connection but Firefox doesn’t think so.

Any comments/help welcome.

Kinternet is the little icon on the right side of the taskbar next to the clock that looks like a little electrical plug. You may have to start the program from the menu first. You click on it once to dial in.

If you right click on the icon, there is a “view log” option you can use to get real-time feedback on what the program is doing.

Hopefully it will work better this way than starting it from the terminal (which I have never tried). Or at least you’ll have a better idea of why it’s not working.

Many thanks for your reply, I should have seen it myself!!
Still didn’t manage to connect and I am confused as to how to proceed. Yast said Network Manager currently controls the Network Settings, again I am not sure how to access it so I had a final try disabling it.
I will be away for a day or two so I will think about how to proceed. I appreciate the easiest solution if I want to go with Linux is to buy another modem. However I wonder how many other problems I’ll find in the Linux jungle if I have spent so long getting nowhere on this problem which a lot of other people have must have.

Well, to start. you can disable Network Manager by going into Network Devices / Network Settings / Global Options and choose “use traditional method with ifup”.

I’m sure what good this will accomplish though.

Generally, if you input all the information correctly into the YAST / Modems wizard, you’ll be able to connect IF your modem is compatible. This is my big question.

Do you know for sure if it is compatible or not?
