kinternet connects but apps don't see internet

I have a new install of 11.1 (586). We are using an AT&T Mercury Wireless Modem to connect. By default the new system is using Network Manager, but that does not allow for forcing a password. We have younger children and need the password not be stored, but required at connection. Kinternet will do this. OK, that said, I was able to set up the modem (though the YaST2 didn’t recognize it) by updating the drivers (from the Sierra Wireless site) and setting it as ttyUSB4. With the kinternet log view open I can see that it is connecting to the internet. But Yast Update, Software Manager, Firefox, etc. will not connect. What setting needs to be changed to open up the connection? I just quit out of Network Manager and opened Kinternet. Is there a setting that needs to disable NM?

thanks in advance for the help,

any thoughts?

Well after KInternet connects, check if you get a valid IP address, i.e. one
that is assigned to you by your service provider’s dhcp service to recognise
your system on them network.

P.S.: I am assuming dhcp here. Let me know if this is not the case.

Thanks,
Here is what the log shows. We switched the dial number to 99**# and it is really slow connecting, but we can get to the internet. I think it was *99# when it connected, but didn’t let us hook in. I would still like to clean it up. It was doing great previously. Thanks for eyes that know what to look for. Thanks for the help.

Hi idee,

I’d suggest posting your message under internet/network section of forum, or even applications instead of mutli-media… so it will get more attention.

I don’t see much wrong with the output, but I am a total newbie. The only thing I would guess is the connect baud rate…360000…it seems awfully high. But, I am only familiar with dial-up 56k type modems and use a low baud (38400) rate as higher baud rates make my connection slow or not able to connect at all.

I am interested in replies to your post as I too would like to dial up and have kinternet ask for my password, but I used YaST>modem Provider parameters to set up my modem and connection and it will not allow me to tick, “Always ask for password”. I prefer to type in the password.

I assume you can dial out but can’t ping? For me, I had to use YaST>System>etc/sysconfig Editor>netconfig_DNS_static_servers to manually add the DNS servers for opensuse:
209.172.0.5 209.172.0.8,

Regards, Orba

I forgot to mention that kppp will ask for password, which is where I’m heading now, to install kppp.
Regards, Orba

I tried something else just before downloading kppp.

I already added the opensuse DNS servers as mentioned above:
YaST>System>etc/sysconfig Editor>Network>General>netconfig_DNS_static_servers and added the two: 209.172.0.5 209.172.0.8>OK then restarted computer,
then I went back to:
System>etc/sysconfig Editor>Network>General>NetworkManager and changed value to “no”>OK
then went to YaST>network devices>modem and edited the settings under “provide parameters” and ticked “always ask for password” next next next let it update, and restarted computer. This time kinternet brings up a window asking for the password.

Don’t know if this will be of help, but it worked for me. I guess I was answering my own problem I was having, in not being able to figure out how to enable “ask for password”.

Here’s my usb analog modem output for reference:

thanks,
I’ll have to do some digging. I won’t be able to get to it until later tonight. I’ll get back.

thanks. Well, we did a bit more digging and found a script line that we didn’t have in place. It is up and running. Thanks again for the help and have a great week.

And the missing script line was?

Sorry,
I haven’t been on line for a while. The answer was:

The modem is set up at /dev/ttyUSB4
The first init string is AT+CGDCONT=1,“IP”,“ISP.CINGULAR”.
No wait for dial tone.
No specific user or password, because they are hardwired in the aircard’s sim chip.
The number to dial is 99**1#.

Also there seems to be some sort of bug in YaST2, in that we could not modify the original modem as per above. It would not take the changes. It seemed to, but always reverted to it’s original settings. But if we set up an additional modem, we could configure as above and are now running.

hope this helps others,
