Kino + Firewire + export DV-Video

Hello Forum I have a problem, related with firewire and kino. The problem seemed to be known (when googling) but I don’t see any solutions. I want to export a rendered video back to a tape device (Sony DSR-25 DV, DVCAM Tapedrive). Now kino (and the firewire modules of openSuSE 12.2, Kernel 3.4.33) can see and handle the device, which means play, start, stop fast forward/back and also start recording is working, but when I try to export via kino, the tape remains black/blank. I didn’t find anything in the libfirewire that could allow me to transfer the video to the tape. Is there anything around, that can handle this? Thanks Hartmut

What if you try recording using the dvcam?

DVCAM - hmm, I think you mean DV-Camcorder. But I mean DVCAM tape standard (DV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).
My working process for that problem is:

  • importing the MXF - format of a Pansonic HD camera (works)
  • arranging, cutting and rendering to DV-format with kdenlive (works)
  • export the DV-format file to the tapedrive (doesn’t work)

So I need to export via firewire to dv1394 or video1394, which is no longer availabe.

Does the tape start when the export is started ? I.e. does it seem to write to tape? If so, you might miss some codec(s). To find out, open a terminal window, start Kino, start the export to tape, then have a look in the terminal windows. Copy the output here, if it’s not clear to you, between CODE tags.

Have you tried rendering it to a file and then use dvconnect to send the file back again to the camera?

Yes the tape starts. I can manipulate (start, stop, record, rewind, eject) the tapedrive. So it starts to record, but the LCD-display remains black and there is nothing on the tape.

Have you tried rendering it to a file and then use dvconnect to send the file back again to the camera?

dvconnect does not work:

me@server:/usr/videos/Rendered> dvcont record
me@server:/usr/videos/Rendered> dvconnect -s Video-Tojo-2012-09-06.dv
WARNING: Cannot set RR-scheduler

me@server:/usr/videos/Rendered> dvcont record
me@server:/usr/videos/Rendered> dvconnect -d /dev/fw1 -s Video-Tojo-2012-09-06.dv
WARNING: Cannot set RR-scheduler
VIDEO1394_TALK_CHANNEL: Invalid argument

dvconnect does not work:

me@server:/usr/videos/Rendered> dvcont record
me@server:/usr/videos/Rendered> dvconnect -s Video-Tojo-2012-09-06.dv
WARNING: Cannot set RR-scheduler
open video1394 device: No such file or directory

– Now with the device file -----
me@server:/usr/videos/Rendered> dvcont record
me@server:/usr/videos/Rendered> dvconnect -d /dev/fw1 -s Video-Tojo-2012-09-06.dv
WARNING: Cannot set RR-scheduler
VIDEO1394_TALK_CHANNEL: Invalid argument

I have no experience with export but can do a test of it tomorrow; I think it might be an issue with either the new firewire drivers or a permission issue, might be another path (device) now.
According to FAQ - IEEE 1394 FireWire Wiki only Kino, Cinelerra and dvconnect is able to export the video back to the camera. The site hasn’t been updated for a while though, so I had a look at KDenlive but it still does not seem to have this feature. Cinelerra is available through packman you could try that one also if you wish.

Uups - sorry my fault… :shame:
Everything works fine now - I switched to a differnet Input source (S-Video) and forgot to switch back.
Kino is doing the job.

Thanks for help
Hartmut

That is nice;)
