When i log in, the kicker does not load automatically, and i have to do
it manually( alt+f2, kicker) and then it comes up. Is this normal and is
there a way to automate it?

No it’s not normal.
When you say kicker - do you just mean kicker (start button). You do
have a panel?
You didn’t say if this is gnome or kde, but have tried adding it to the
panel?
