Keyboard

Problem is, i see no keyboard menu under Yast. Dont know what caused it, fresh opensuse 11.2 install

Maybe its a installation gone wrong, since i cant find apt-get either.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that apt-get is
something used by other distros instead of zypper and is therefore not
installed as a part of openSUSE.

The YaST hardware keyboard setting, AFAIK, is derived from your locale; I’m not sure how you can change that if you are using a non-standard keyboard for your locale other than by changing your locale.

To set the software keyboard under KDE4 go to System settings>Regional and language>Keyboard settings.

I have an older wireless Logitech mulItimedia keyboard. Post installation of openSUSE v11.3, a number of the keys no longer worked as expected. Fine, just reconfigure the keyboard setting, like under the very obvious “System settings > Keyboard & Mouse” or “Yast > Hardware > System Keyboard”, right? Wrong.

I’d just like to comment on what an unnecessary PITA it was to find that they are located in “System settings>Regional and language>Keyboard settings”. This is an excellent example of a poor design logic and unnecessary fragmentation … same thing in the case of setting some of the time and date configuration (after all, why would you put them in such a ridiculus spot like “Adjust Date and Time” or “Digital Clock Settings” ?)

Upon installation of KDE 4.5, I see that what I ranted about was changed. Kudos on the KDE team for the change to a logical location/configuration (i.e. system settings > hardware > input devices > keyboard )

Unfortunately, I still haven’t figured out the correct keyboard that this should be set too … its a Logitech Cordless Freedom Optical (model Y-RE20) … none of the obvious choices makes all of the extra keys work … I should note that it has never been correctly identified, however, under the old xorg.conf situation, it was identified and worked well as "Option “XkbModel” “microsoftpro” … I don’t know what Microsoft keyboard this would correlate too (I tried what was in the list, but nadda).

Unfortunately, this design fault still persists … boo hiss boo (i.e. some settings still reside in system settings > Common appearence and behaviour > locale > time & dates )
