Tumbleweed version 2.43.1
After years of working fine (regularly updating) the behavior is now such:
root works fine
user:
keyboard and mouse clicks work only in applications but not for Gnome (super key, menu key, etc.)
Application (terminal) in autostart does not run.
Everything works using icewm. (I changed the session using Yast2/Alternatives while I was in root.)
With the current status, I can work inside my user account using icewm but would prefer to run at least root in a Gnome session. How can I select different sessions for root and my user account?
In my message, I just wanted to list the symptoms I am seeing. The ability to run different sessions for root vs. user is not that important to me. When I login as user, keyboard and mouse are only working in an app (events are only processed by the app). When I login as root, everything works as expected.
Short explanation for how I get an app even started in my user session because autostart does not work: I deleted the openSUSE welcome folder (using the root account of course) which then caused the default welcome screen to be displayed after my user login. Moving the cursor to this welcome screen, mouse clicks work. For example, I can cause firefox to start from that welcome screen and move around inside it using keys (tab, enter, super, etc.). What I remember now is that mouse clicks don’t work inside the browser but for its window (close).
BTW, I made a mistake reading the log correctly. The version I mention is some library version, not the Tumbleweed version (same log line). I am running the very latest updates though.
