Hi
I have got an OpenSuse 11.4 64 bit and I have some problems with keyboard that, after some time of use, gets stuck on last key pressed. I’ve changed three keyboard (PS2), but the problem keeps repeating every time. Moreover, this problem was also present in an old machine with OpenSuse 11.3 and different motherboard. I think that it arises from Virtual Box use, but there is not an evidence of direct relation. My Virtual Box is always open and sometimes the problem starts immediately, that is after VIrtual Box starts; sometimes after many hours of labor. Is there anybody that can help me?
Thanks in advanced.

Hello lepturgeo and welcome to the openSUSE forums. I am sorry to hear of your problems. I just recently started using VirtualBox and have installed 4.1.2 from this repository (Do Not Include the Quotes):
I have not experienced a keyboard problem but normally I run the VM in full screen and don’t let it run all of the time. I may toggle in and out to fetch something from the real machine however. Normally, one would suggest this as being a hardware problem, but it may be a resource issue where you are giving over to much to the VM session. I decided to bulk up in memory and disk space which does help a lot, but as a recent user, I don’t have any suggestions. There is a very nice utility by please_try_again that can reinstall the vboxdrv’s anytime you update your kernel and you can find a reference to it here:
automatically recompile kernel modules after kernel update
I also talk about it here:
What VM do you recommend for openSUSE?
You can find kernel 3.0 here I think in this repository (Do Not Include the Quotes):
So, you might try a newer version of VirtualBox and/or a new kernel. The bash script can help reload the drivers if needed. Be aware that updating things should always be done with some caution and after making a backup of any critical data. I have found that VirtualBox, at least from Oracle, works just fine with the latest kernel versions. I have sometimes found that upgrading the desktop to the most recent version might not be the best thing to do, such as using GNOME 3 or KDE 4.7 as it can cause some very odd issues to occur. I have thrown out a lot of stuff in the hope that something useful might stick and good luck.
Thank You,
Thank you for your reply, jdmcdaniel3, and sorry from my inaccuracy: the kernel version of my OpenSuse is 2.6.37 and Virtual Box is 4.0.12. But I think that the version of VBox is not important because the problem also arose in my old pc with OpenSuse 11.3 (I don remember the version of Virtual Box): when I did an downgrade from 11.3. to 11.2 the problem disappeared. Moreover I am not sure that the keyboard gets stuck due to it. A this point I think that I will take your advice and I will try to change the kernel.

you are running openSUSE 11.3 in a VM…but what is the host operating
system that the VM is running in–since i’ve not seen this problem
before i have a sneaking suspicion that your problem lies somewhere in
the VM to host to keyboard path…
on the other hand, you don’t mention which desktop environment you are
running, nor if you have changed any of the accessibility settings or
confirmed that openSUSE correctly identifies your keyboard…
wait, i don’t know so much about openSUSE in a VM and if it is supposed
to ‘see’ the real keyboard or a virtual one–whichever, something in the
VM or host is muffing the keys…
what happens if you boot from an openSUSE 11.3 live cd, and before you
do any customizing at all–do you have any problems with the system’s
keyboard getting “stuck on last key pressed”? if not you are then
certain it is not an openSUSE problem.
btw, what does “stuck on last key pressed” mean? is the same letter
being repeated to screen over and over…how many times…what do you
do to stop it?
so you used different keyboards, were they all PS2, or USB or what?

It is not clear to me whether openSuSE is the host or guest. Perhaps Daniele could elucidate? I have seen similar problems when I forgot to update the guest tools to match the VBox version. I believe this might also be a symptom of having a mismatched extension pack.
If the host kernel is to be upgraded then it woul seem opportune to update VBox as well. We also do not know whether VBox was installed from the openSuSE or Oracle packages. My experience is running multiple VMs on a headless server. Running the VBox host on a desktop machine may be different.
Hi to all and thanks in advance for your help.
OpenSuse is host and VBox is installed on it. In VBox there is a Windows XP guest, and the keyboard gets stuck in both. The problem seems to arise after VBox starts, but not only when I’m working on it. That is, in some cases the keyboard gets stuck while I’m on the guest OS, in other cases when I’m working on the host (and VBOx is iconized). After that, there are no other possibilities and the host machine must be restarted.

please, when you ask for help here give the desktop environment you are
using…if you are using KDE4 go Personal Settings - Configure Desktop
> Workspace Appearance and Behavior > Accessibility and go through the
four tabs (Bell, Modifier Keys, Keyboard Filters, and Activation
Gestures) and uncheck all boxes and then click the “Apply” button…
and, see if the “keyboard gets stuck” problem continues…if it doesn’t
you know where the problem was…and, now, if you have some sort of
physical challenge requiring special needs, then reset only those
setting actually needed (most folks need none of them)…
if your problem continues then you must tell us the brand and model
number of your machine, and keyboard…and please show us the output of
entering the following into a terminal
zypper lr -d
and copy/paste the output back to this thread using the instructions
here: http://goo.gl/i3wnr
