Keyboard doesn't work on boot menu

I am having a number of problems with my opensuse 15.5 installation and planned to do a rescue boot with the installation CD. Unfortunately, the boot menu does not respond to any keyboard inputs, so I can’t select anything but the default 15.5 boot.

What can I do to either make the boot menu respond to the keyboard or to force a boot from the CD?

@Simpleguy is it plugged into a USB 2.0 port, what type of keyboard is it…?

Yes, it’s plugged into the USB port. It works fine after boot: It just doesn’t work on the boot menu. Cherry KC 1000 keyboard. Should I try another? I have plenty of them.

I forgot to mention that it used to work on the boot menu, but stopped at some point.

What exactly do you call “boot menu”?

This is the Boot Menu

This is grub menu. grub is using BIOS services to access keyboard. Can you enter BIOS setup using this keyboard?

I can’t do anything on this menu but wait for the default boot. All input is ignored.

Is this a laptop or a desktop. Any chance you can pull out the cmos battery then put it back after 30 seconds. There might be a chance that it will be reset. If you can enter the bios change usb to enabled instead of auto.

It’s a desktop.

I don’t know how to get into bios, but will research it.

Plugging into a different USB port might solve the problem. USB3 ports sometimes don’t like USB2 or USB1 devices. Certainly try another keyboard if switching doesn’t help. BIOS entry is typically DEL or F2 or ESC. It varies by PC/motherboard brand.

Thanks! Just changed the USB port. Will try booting. I assume that the BIOS access is during boot.

Changing the USB port worked! Accessed the BIOS data using esc key.

Thanks again for your help.
