The problem is, I’m sure, the result of something I did.
I was trying to modify the boot menu (using yast in 11.0) to get the entry to boot 10.3 back after a finger check deleted it.
The end result is that neither system will boot. They both stop with the last two messages:
/bin/run-init: /sbin/init: permission denied
kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init
I would greatly appreciate some assistance in rectifying this problem.
Is it possible to post the output of ‘fdisk -l’ along with your menu.1st.
I don’t know what the error is but you seem to be getting as far as initrd being loaded and it snags at the point the system wants to kick in the init process.
Do you have a separate root (/) and boot partition? Ifso, maybe your root is being mounted on the wrong partition?
It’s a wild guess but some more info might shed some light on what’s gone wrong.
Thanks for the info; I got the Suse 11.0 fixed by doing an “update” install with the “only update installed packages” - that fixed it so that 11.0 would boot. The suse 10.3 is another problem (there are issues with 10.3 install and sata drives)
But - for your info because you requested it, I have posted the info requested. I got the fdisk and menu.lst by booting the install dvd and selecting the repair option.
Then ran
Wow, I think thats probably the most Linux partitions I’ve seen on one disk
It could be your boot entries in menu.1st had the wrong root specified, but seeing you fixed the boot thing it’s not relevant anymore (as your old menu.1st is probably wiped out).
As for the 10.3 sata issues you mention, what exactly is the problem? CD/DVD access or can’t you boot at all?
@Swerdna
Hi — you caught me. Actually, I think I had the correct sin tax when I ran the command; but keyed it wrong in the “code box”

The kernel that booted the 10.3 install dvd had a problem with SATA drives - So when one booted from the 10.3 install dvd, it could not find the sata hard drive – also it hung for quite a while (10 or more minuets) before continuing. The work-around was to start the install by booting with a dvd with a patched kernel and then interrupt the boot and switch to the 10.3 dvd; a real pain in the backside. Novel chose tonot fix the 10.3 install dvd. There is a rather lengthly bugzilla entry about this problem.
(my 10.3 install is on a sata drive -thats the /dev/sdb shown in the fdisk attachment)
Well I’m just about to install 11 GM and have prepped new root and /home partitions and with the old 10.2 /home copied to the 11 /home. Noy much danger there.
