Kernel Panic on install

Hello all,

I recently decided to try out OpenSuSE after a few years of using kubuntu. However, upon lanuching the install disk I get the following kernel panic: “kernel panic-not syncing VFS:unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,1)”. I am using the 64-bit DVD install and I have verified the md5 of both the download and the disk itself.

The specs for my computer are:
Core 2 Q6600
4gb ddr2 RAM
MSI P6N-SLI motherboard
Nvidia GTX 480

Thanks for any help,
Mike

Do you mean you did this:

I get the same error if I check the installation media or if I select Installation.

Are you able to try the disc in another PC?

If not, how easy is it for you to burn another disc? Which must be burned SLOW.

I have burned the disc twice with the same results. I have also verrified the md5 hash of the discs.

I can’t wasily check on another computer since my laptop lacks a optical drive.

To add to Carl post above, when you start burning, before that always tick the check box to verify data after burning. Most of the burner software have this option. That will give you insight of the burning process, if every thing went well that mean DVD/CD is burned well, other wise it will throw error. Which will possibly means that the DVD/CD is not in good condition.

Good luck!

make sure there are no finger prints/scratches etc on the disk’s surface…

and, what about if you try to run the memory test or firmware
test…do they also fail? [you may have an flakey optical reader, do
you still have that Kubuntu (or other) disk? will it (they) boot?]

if there are smokers in your environment: when was the last time you
cleaned the reader/burner’s lens?

by the way, with that much RAM the memory test needs to run overnight,
at least…

The memtest works, but not the firmware test. It seems that anything that needs to launch the kernel fails. Is there an alternative text only version that I could download and try. I haven’t been able to find one.

Press F3 to start the install in text mode but I don’t think this will help you. If a disk fails memory media test it is a bad burn.

Could be the BIOS setting for the hard drive?

Post your settings.

Cheers!

there is a text only install available on the DVD, i don’t recall
exactly how to get to it…down at the bottom of the first green
screen there are a number of options…AH, hit F3 and you should see
a text option…

BUT, be advised: i kinda doubt you are gonna make a usable system that
way…the error means (to me) that there is something about your
disk/file system hardware that is not liked by the kernel…

look at these, see if you can’t find a clue: http://tinyurl.com/2wudytb

are you running inside a VM?
do you have some sort of RAID running…

Or hold shift during boot of the DVD
and when you arrive at the text: boot:

type: linux

and hit enter

Why don’t you download the live CD and try if you can boot with it?

Thank to everyone for your suggestions. I was able to get the 11.3 KDE live cd to install properly.

Excellent. Hope we were of some use.
