kernel-default-5.10.1-1.1.x86_64 : Update Warning

hi,

just for information!!!

Updated to kernel-default-5.10.1-1.1.x86_64 and found this laptop froze before the kde login window appeared, ok if nomemset put in kernel parameters.
With this setting the only option for the display was
Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768

going back to kernel-default-5.9.12-1.1.x86_64 and without the nomemset, booting was normal with
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1600 x 900, maximum 16384 x 16384
eDP connected primary 1600x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 382mm x 215mm
1600x900 60.02*+
1440x900 60.02
1280x800 60.02
1280x720 60.02
1024x768 60.02
800x600 60.02
640x480 60.02

Conclusion

The Radeon driver for this graphics card,
VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Stoney [Radeon R2/R3/R4/R5 Graphics] [1002:98e4] (rev ea),
is not supported in the kernel-default-5.10.1-1.1.x86_64

Is this graphics card no longer supported in openSUSE Tumbleweed from now on, or is it to early in the development circle for it to be included in the new kernel?

cheers

Hi
It’s a amdgpu bug AFAIK, I had success booting by adding amdgpu.dc=0 (as well as plymouth.enable=0) with my Wani/Topaz dual gpu Laptop, the Laptop with a Mullins gpu (R3 Graphics) was fine. It could be your CPU, which is? another user was working on IRC has the same issue, but stuck with nomodeset until a fix comes through…

hi,

Thanks for the info

adding kernel parameter
amdgpu.dc=0
had no effect, the boot still hangs after the grub screen

Hi
Seems to be same sort of era computer… some sort of kernel bug, not related to the iwlwifi issue… 1180442 – amdgpu not detected on boot with eDP connector same as this one

Hi again,

for info only!!!

The failure on booting only occurred on this laptop,
Other installs for example, see below, went without a hitch

I do not have access to another machine with an Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Stoney [Radeon R2/R3/R4/R5 Graphics]
so cannot trace if its pure video or video-cpu combination causing the problem

There are these errors during booting an this laptop,
… rtw_8821ce … rf 2 isn’t supported
… rtw_8821ce … failed to setup chip efuse info
… rtw_8821ce … failed to setup chip information
… Kfd Kfd: Stoney not supported in kfd

With respect to wifi on this laptop,
there is no effect whether the drivers are installed or not with respect to booting.
after updating to Kernel: 5.10.1-1-default the wifi worked ok. but no longer worked with Kernel: 5.9.12-1-default

cheers

PS
originally during the updating process the following message occurred but is no longer present
[Firmware Bug]: cpu 0
Invalid threshold
interrupt effect 1 for bank 4, block 0

corrections (oops)

post #1: where nomemset was stated: should have been nomodeset

post #5: wifi works ok when rtl8821ce-kmp-default is installed to match installed kernel

Same here rtw88 was not working with rtl8821ce.

Rectified

Upgraded to kernel-default-5.10.5-1.1.x86_64

the graphics driver now installs as per kernel-default-5.9.12-1-default

hi again,

Although errors are still occurring during boot,
the WiFi is working as normal with the following installed

kernel-default-5.10.5-1.1.x86_64

rtl8821ce-kmp-default-git20201115_k5.10.5_1-4.8.x86_64

cheers

Here is the bugreport for rtw_8821ce
https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1178105

Do you install the rtl8821ce-blacklist-rtw_8821ce package?
https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Sauerland:/hardware/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/

thanks for the info

the blacklist package had not been installed,
with it installed the error messages no longer appear

wireless and radeon drivers now function correctly with kernel-default-5.10.5-1.1.x86_64 installed

cheers
