Kernel 7.2 update today destroyed graphics -- downgraded kernel

Update this morning made graphics not usable. Graphics went to 1040x760 (or close to that) and no changes could be made. Upgrade included kernel version 7.2. See system info below when back on 7.1.8. I backtracked to kernel 7.1.8 and all was back to normal.

As always, if your using the open driver, it’s likely not rebuilt…

All good here on the RTX4000 with cuda repo.

Then force a reinstall of the kmp so it rebuilds,

I don’t know how to do that. If you have a ref to point me to, I’ll give it a try.

I’ll look that up separately. My gentoo and arch vms have had 7.2 for a little while with no graphics issues. But I think libvirt vms do not use the same drivers as the host does.

In myrlyn, do I just update the nvidia kmp files especially the default? Myrlyn is showing an available update.

Yes just the kmp should be enough

I tried updating G06-kmp-default in myrlyn and got a bunch of deinstall/install options that I have no idea what they mean. I can’t lose my graphics. I will stick with 7.1.8 kernel for now.

There seems to be an issue with the Nvidia repo atm. It is missing quite some packages. No G07 packages are shown…also the G06 package set is incomplete.

And yes, there is no closed source G06 package for the latest kernel yet. The open kmp is available.

I will set 7.1.8 kernel as my default temporarily and try the new one periodically.

I have the same problem with G05 driver.
During boot time I can see a prime.service error.
At least my box boots into console mode.
right now I’m using also kernel 7.1.8 :cry:

(re)builds for the 7.0.2 default kernel and works here.

I have “nvidia-driver-G06-kmp-default” installed now, like you. In merylyn there is an installed and available version. If I click to upgrade it with up-arrow, I get about 10 non-installable providers and 5 choices of conflict resolution – none of which I have any confidence that I know what they mean.

I will wait a while. 7.1.8 works fine for me.

Remove the lock of nvidia-modprobe. This seems the reason for the upgrade issue.

And please use zypper dup to upgrade Tumbleweed. zypper up is for Leap.

I don’t ever remember doing that lock. I think when I went to “nvidia service” that may have done that.
